Does anyone have step by step details on how to do this? Or preferably step by step with pictures? I got a mkIII with a chopped barrel and my plan is to remove the barrel, shave off a bit than rechamber for 7.62x54r id restore it as the receiver is complete minus the rear sight, but i dont have a full length barrel. Any thoughts and ideas would be appreciated!

Check out the Ross Rifle Forum. Similar discussion there in one of the threads. Some good pics of a barrel removal and a custom made wrench for the job. If I recall the fellow who did the barrel removal is from Calgary.
Some MKIII's have been re-barrelled or rechambered to magnum cartridges like 300 H+H.
I am contemplating something similar but in 7x65R if I re-barrel or using the 7x65R case with the 312 bullet (essentially a rimmed 30-06) if I just re-chamber.
The Russian milsurp ammo is cheap and plentiful at the moment so a retrofit of a Bubba Ross to that caliber would be attractive to some. But I think it would be way less expensive to just pick up a Mosin.

The Russians received / captured tens of thousands of Rosses after WW1. In the 1956 my father shot at the Moscow World Shooting Championships and for entertainment he entered the running boar match. He didn't have a suitable rifle, but was directed towards a green army truck where a line was forming. At the front of the line he signed for a sporterized Ross rechambered to 7.62x54. The same rifle was used for official biathlon until the sport governing body made it less of a military patrol he-man fullbore rifle match on bangy boards and more of an athletic mixed sport all ages sport with .22s and Spandex.

Can you direct me to that particular forum?

Mk. III barrels have standard right hand square threads. The barrel face does have some cuts that will make setting the barrel back interesting.
Even if the barrel has been cut, it wouldn't make sense to go through the time and expense of setting back and rechambering unless the bore is really good. It is not going to be an inexpensive project, unless you do it yourself. The reamer and gauges by themselves are going to be a couple of hundred dollars.

I am planning to do myself i just have never removed a ross barrel, and havent been able to find info how to do it

Just like any other bolt action rifle. You need a barrel vise and an action wrench. The Mk. III barrels that I have pulled were in tight. Helps to cut a narrow relief groove in the barrel shoulder just in front of the receiver ring. This releases torque. Given that the barrel is being set back, this does no harm.

Here you go. just remove the spaces between the http: and the // and paste into your browser.

I made the barrel wrench and bushing. Just need a barre vise to strap it into and the barrels come right off. I would be willing to help.

I watched my gunsmith breech and unbreech a few Ross Mk III's and Mk II**'s. (same thread)

It didn't look hard. It just came out fairly readily.

As long as the barrel is held tightly in a barrel vice and you have a suitable action wrench, likely with a pipe extension on the handle.

Some have made good points though.

1) Just buy a Mosin, to use 7.62x54R ammo.

2) Reload 7.62x54R components into .303 brass. (after reducing the powder charge to the correct amount, not using the same amount that was in the shell!!)

I have seen Rosses that were rebarreled, but really not that many of them. As Wheaty said, it's like pushing a string uphill.

Now I don't know much about this stuff, but if the barrel cut back already could you not just rebore the chamber to 7.62x54R and the stub barrel way? Like I said, I have no idea what is involved, but it may be an option and would be using the original barrel cut outs etc.
