My first rifle, want to get it right

A CZ Varmint model.

The CZ bolt.

the CZ's.

Get a CZ 452.

Hear is some ultimate wizzdom.
And there was one in the EE yesterday for under $500.........iff'n it's still there.
Forgit the twack twack twack chit and get a quality rimfire such as mentioned plurally above.

Nutt'in more frustrating than dealing with frustration.

For a bolt id go Marlin XT-22R very accurate out of the box and inexpensive.
If you want a semi remington 597 more accurate then a 10/22 and cheaper .
I've become somewhat of a 597 fan lately.
$149 I couldn't pass it up. Put a Bushnell Banner 3-9 scope on it for $49.
I like the size a lot, similar to real size rifle.
I found it to be twice the rifle of the 2 10/22's I've owned. I no longer own any 10/22's. 2X as accurate, 1/2 as expensive.
To each their own, there are certain things I don't like about it, such as the lack of a bolt retention mechanism if you dry fire after the last round, but it's a $149 rifle. I can only imagine the heavy barrel to be even more accurate.
I'm tempted to get a BDC scope to start shooting out to 100yds, but it is so dialled in at 50 that I don't want to touch it!
As someone else said, .22's are sort of like a warm up round.

This is awesome, thanks guys

Just FWIW - if I were to build a custom 10/22 - nobody has mentioned if the parts list I had posted is correct. Is that everything I need (less glass) for a complete build?

My 1022 has cobwebs on it. My CZ, s are the first out of my safe then my savage TR. I like to hit what I'm shooting at.Spray and pray gets old. Buy a bolt gun.

A built gun could be great, could be crap. You never know until you sink money into it.
Thats why people have said CZ and a bolt action. No messing around.
If you want a semi auto that shoot half well, be perpaired to drop over 1+k.
Look for them in Wanstalls or P&D.
For a semi auto, you get what you pay for, unless its a sr22!

I'm a member at the Phoenix in Edmonton. I have the 1022 and the CZ (223 & 17hmr) that we're all talking about. If you want to try them out I'm a regular there Tues. and Thur. around noon.

I builted a dar 22 from dlask. Receiver and 20ich barrel from them, a kidds bolt, triger assembly from (if my memory serves me well ) hornet in florida with 2 3/4 lbs and a nice red laminated stock from boyds. And at 50 yards it shoots a dime everytime. And at 153 meters its supprising what it can do.

This is awesome, thanks guys

Hey justmessing~I'd urge you to re-read all the replies so far. I wouldn't even PRETEND to guess how many 10s of thousands of dollars have been spent (collectively) on various 22s by the guys recommending the CZ bolt action. Like I'm about to...they're trying to steer you in the right direction the FIRST time. Me? I've owned a Ruger 10/22, a couple of Marlin semis, Winchester lever action, Winchester semi, Henry Pump action, and bolt guns made by Marlin, Anschutz, Norinco, Savage, CZ and probably a few more I can't remember. In fact, multiple bolt guns by some of those manufacturers. You know what? Most of those are gone, and the CZ is what I use most. A 452 Varmint in .22LR. We all see the appeal of semis, especially nice ones...but the "spray & pray" stuff gets old quick~as someone has pointed out already. Save yourself ALLOT of time and money, and consider going the opposite direction from what you've indicated. Get a CZ 452 Varmint, and on the off chance you still want a less accurate gun with a crappier trigger, that takes 10x longer to take apart to clean.....THEN get yourself a 10/22.

The natural progression of things will see you getting into centerfire rifles before long (I shoot/hunt allot with .223) and the CZ bolt action is excellent practice tool for a bolt action centerfire. I guess the bottom line is this~you leave allot on the table picking a semi...and by "allot"...I mean allot of accuracy. As a new shooter, that may/may not matter at this moment in time...but it will very soon. I'm not saying "don't get a semi"...I/we're just saying don't start with one.

if your going to build a 10/22 you will need a receiver, bolt, charging handle/guide rod and spring, trigger group, barrel, and stock as well as trigger group pins, takedown screw, bolt buffer and vblock with bolts to attach the barrel. you can go with a built in rail receiver like Dlask or purchase a rail separate. with the dollar the way it is, and the not so available parts at the moment you will be paying a premium for sure. If a bit of your own customization is what your after, you can do it somewhat with a CZ as well. for me i went with an upgraded bottom metal, magwell, mag release lever, stock and most importantly a DIP adjustable sear and yo dave spring kit for the trigger. (might be missing something) mine is a 17 hmr but a 22lr would look no different. it is one of my favorite rifles of all time and one I will never ever sell. as for which one first, its entirely up to you. if you really get into shooting your likely going to have both anyway. here are some pics of mine for you

.22lr that was nicely put!!!!
+1
Again, its lkke buying optics. Buy once, cry once!
We all learned the hard way. We are just trying to save you money.

Trust me I'm reading everything - I have no hate for CZ (an SP is likely in my future).
I just have no seat time with a bolt action - never fired one in my life. I know I'll own one, will it be first? Second? I don't know, that's why I'm here. This thread has definitely opened my up (a lot) to picking me up sooner rather than later, but I'm still 100% in research mode. Like I said, I'm currently 'shopping' without a PAL

If your mad/crazy about a semi.
Please look at dlask, volquartsen and magnum research.
Also look at what sells lots on EE.
If the rifle is posted on EE, there must be a reason for it.
I dont see to many Vol, MR, coopers but I see plenty of dlasks and frankin builds.
Im guilty just as the next guy.

I agree on the bolt-action and specifically CZ comments in this thread. From my experience I was between a savage mark 2 and a henry lever action for my first 22 rifle. There were a lot of similar replies saying to spend the little bit of extra cash and get a CZ bolt action to begin with.
I didn't take the advice and bought the savage mark 2 and eventually a 10/22.
Sold the 1022 and the Savage is up for sale right now. I have no problems with either of those. I found out semi-auto 22 wasn't as much fun as I thought it would be and after getting the CZ I had no reason to keep the Savage. With the money I lost on selling these I should have bought the CZ to begin with.

I bought a CZ 455 canadian edition that I will keep it forever and I guarantee I will own more CZs in the future. I already find it hard to pass up on the CZs I see in the EE.

Just thought I'd chime in here.... after having built up too many factory 10/22's I'd likely now just plunk down the coin and get a Dlask or Magnum Research after what I've learned over the years because by building the 10/22 it helped me to gain the confidence to build other platforms.... Buuuuuuuut there's no better feeling than building and fine tuning your own gun (I'd never trade in that feeling) and there's no better rifle to learn how to put a firearm together than a 10/22 IMHO..... So I'd say keep the dream alive and build your own instead of a prebuilt... sure it will likely cost you a few more buckaroos to build your own, but the learning experience will be priceless....
