30 Remington necked down to .224

I am sure the last thing anyone would be interested in is another .224 cartridge. But I am.

After digging out some 30 Remington brass today to take a photo for another thread, I noticed it would make the ultimate (to me) 22 cal cartridge. I have never been a huge fan of the popular 22-250, mostly because I tend to stray away from what is popular, lol. And this case looks to fit the bill perfectly, it's not as large as a Middlestead, it's rimless, it doesn't have too much taper, takes large rifle primers, has sufficient case capacity to be somewhat of a speed demon, and well, it's different.

I know the 6.8 SPC is a shortened and necked down 30 Rem, but I would like to use the full length 30 Rem case.


Does anyone know if this one has been before? Saving me some headache and research?
 
Do you want to base it off the 30 rem ar? If that's the case 22 ppc would be very close the same and still oddball but not crazy hard to find. You would also get Lapua brass to use instead of rem's hit or miss crappy brass.

I have, the 30 rem is rimless, 220 swift is semi rimmed, 30 rem has smaller case head and less taper. And the 30 rem is slightly shorter.

I think it would be balistically between the 22-250 and the Swift, but closer to the 250. Less case taper, not such a drastic shoulder length.

It might not make sense to anyone else. I want to do it because I can, and it fits what I think a high performance 22 cal should be.
 
I know all about the AI's. In some cases I don't like the drastic shoulder.


This project might make no sense to most people, but I am still wanting to move forward.

I was just sniffing around to see if there was/is a 22 cal wildcat based on the 30 Remington. If not, great! I'll figure it out myself. If it has been done, that's great too!! I'll look at the specs....

Seems that would be the case, the 22-30 would just be slightly longer, with less taper and a smaller case head.

It just seems to address all the "issues" you presented.

Pros to 22/250ai...
Just need a 22-250 rifle, brass & dies are available, most smiths have the reamer already.
Cons...
Turn a $1200 rifle into a $1000 rifle after spending $200 smithing.

22/30 pros...
None. Well "one off" if you can call that a pro.
Cons..
Need custom dies. Brass not easy to find and will require extensive prep like neck turning, reamer needs to be ordered, turn a $1200 rifle into a $400 rifle by spending $500 smithing.
Either way you probably get 1500-2000 rounds before the barrel needs to replaced and you get to sink more money into the pit lol
 
True Hitzy, brass isn't an issue as I have accumulated lots of 30 Remington brass over the years, I am guessing 800-1,000 pieces. I also have about 500 35 Remington, not that they the the same, just saying.

Having 22-250 performance in a better feeding case, it should anyway, less taper, smaller case head, and more neck if needed makes sense to me. Even if all that didn't matter, I have always wanted a "one off".

Will use a rem 308 based action.... Twist and throat for 60 grain partitions and 55 grain or so varmint/target bullets.
 
No Wildcat is truly new - this sounds a lot like the 22 Kilbourn Mag that was supplanted by the 22-250.

None of the Wildcats I've created made any real sense, nor might this, but I'd say go with it.

30 Rem brass is scarce. Even once-fired can fetch $1 each. That could underwrite some of the cost.
 
In handloader 113 Ken Waters wrote about the 22 Niedner Magnum.It is the 25 Rem.shortend to 1.9 in.and necked down to 22 cal.Loads listed are 26 to 26,5 3031 with 45 to 55 gr.bullets for 3000 to 3300 fps and 25gr.of 4064 and 3031 for 2700 to 2900 fps
