Hi guys,

just got my first SKS.

It's a chinese type 56, sadly not first owner. The guy I bought it from received it in a trade and never checked it out apparently.

It obviously shot corrosive ammo and wasn't cleaned. Now it is clean, sort of, but I got another problem.

The thing won't fire. I tried to dryfire to see if it functionned well and I can pull the trigger all the way back and it won't do a thing. Safety on safety off, tried to hold the hammer, then sear while actionning the trigger, can't get it to do anything. Since I can't get the hammer down I can't take it apart.

I'm new to this trigger group and I'm no expert.

Any idea?

I don't understand how are you able to hold the hammer without being able to take it apart? You should be able to just flip the rear tab up and pull out the pin to slide the top cover off. Then slide the bolt & carrier to the rear and out. Then you can see the hammer. There is this kind of pin spike thing in front of the hammer, if you hold that down and pull the trigger the hammer should drop.
MAKE SURE YOUR HOLDING ONTO THE HAMMER WHEN DOING THIS
IT WILL HIT YOUR THUMB. IT WILL HURT....ALOT. Maybe post up a pic of the internals
 
There is a small black tab that will snap when trigger group is installed properly. You had to press this to release the trigger group.
 
And it does make a difference which position the safety is in as well. Take a look at a couple Youtube videos. Also make sure your firing pin is free and rattles in the bolt. They are known for rusting in guns that have not been cleaned regularly. Check the gas piston as well the other area that rusts easily.
 
Hammer position has nothing to do with disassembly. Safety ON to be able to remove TG. Look up some U tube videos that refer to trigger work and you fined good info on checking functionality. If the disconnector is not positioning the trigger bar to properly engage the sear, the hammer will not fall. Post some picture of your trigger group there may be something obvious to those that are experienced. Also is this sks in the original stock or after market/plastic? There may be some fitting required in order to get the TG and receiver to lock and engage properly. Pictures are your friend.

I did check all the stickys and every youtube videos I could find before posting. Nothing that refer to this issue and from my understanding I can't take it (the trigger group) apart if the hammer is not down.

It came with a russian stock rather than it's original chicom and I've tried it in an ATI also, both are no go...

watch this guy...he'll tell you everything you need to know..... in the first 30 seconds.
You will see a little hole/window, in the side of the trigger group, if you look in it, and press down on the disconnector bar and it lines up in the hole against the sear...as you pull the trigger.... "Caution" you will hurt your finger/thumb, when the hammer comes forward.The disconnector has to line up in the hole, or nothing will happen , you can pull the trigger all day long..

Sounds like trigger group was not pushed in all the way to the lock position. Is the tension spring still in the stock? If so, is it seated all the way in? If it's out too far the trigger group will not seat " snap in". I've had more then a few come across my bench that have not been cleaned after corrosive ammo used and gas system is the biggest problem, rusted shut. Trigger can be tricky if your new to this platform so read into proper instal. If you had it in a few different stocks you must be able to remove it right?
 
Thank you so much Quinnbrian, I was able to dissasemble following the video and taking the magazin catch off first.

The assembly was still full of cosmo and corrosion but the real problem was the safety pin was not set in the safety spring fork right, so the fork spring was not in the right position.

Thx jeep, it was a really tricky to troubleshoot with my lack of knowledge and most videos show how to make a trigger job but doesn't go as far as showing the fork spring proper position so yeah... it was a pain.

Now I can tell I know it well enough and got pretty damn good at putting the hammer back. First attempts were painfull.

I took the entire rifle apart. The firing pin does move freely.

Among other things, the gas piston was stuck rusted in the tube but I was able to get it out and clean it with a pipe brush.

The barrel was really dirty. I cleaned it for a long time and let it sit with Hoppes. It's shinny and clean but I still see a couple of spots. We'll see how it shoots...
