How to increase your odds when road hunting.

I couldn't believe the deer hung around so long, my rifle was behind the seat in a gun case. Then I had to fumble around in my day pack for ammo. Seemed to take forever to get a shot off.

Haahaa so you did still have to work for your deer
Be proud of your buck he's A nice one and you earned it
 
nice deer.
Last season I spent hours keeping bait fresh at my black bear barrel. I also spent a lot of time checking trail cameras and fine tuning my stand locations.
One day while driving to one of the bait locations I spotted a nice bruin in a field a few hundred meters off the road . We got out and stalked the bear to within 200 meters and dropped it right where it was eating.

It was a very nice bear...but made all the effort we put into the bait site for nothing.
Thats the way some hunts seem to unfold.

as for boots and hunting appearl I buy the majority of my gear from LL bean due to their lifetime no questions asked return policy.
 
When you think about it everyone road hunts to some extent !
It's not all that different from using a Horse ,ATV, boat,or snowmobile You need them to get wear the game is .
I'm a stone sculptor its hard dirty work but it is rewording
I meet people all the time that have a fantasy what thay think a artists life shood be based on a Hollywood Stereotype .
I see the same thing a lot on CGN

well, I heard that the CO's are all getting those turbo charged Dodges with after market tricks done to them, would be near impossible to out run them!
 
best way to increase success road hunting, find a road in a good area, drive to the end of it and start to walk and get far away from other hunters.. lol

In which province? They don't even have gas $$ in the budget for them in Ontario and I do not see them often here in SK. In fact I have been here three years now and never once seen one any time I have been hunting? On the AB side I found where someone had dumped 5 unskinned coyotes and a moose carcass on the shoulder of a well travelled paved twp rd in easy view. I called to notify them of the find and the C.O I spoke with said they couldn't be bothered to investigate and that the RM crews would probably clean them up once they were back into work on monday? So I highly doubt they are getting turbo charged Dodge vehicles?!! :rolleyes:
 
A few yrs back, we had a horse on our property. When my wife was feeding it grain a few deer would hang around in hopes to get some. My wife started filling bowls with grain for the deer, well! I couldn't believe how many deer started to show up. We had as many as 14 deer at a go, some of the fawns would eat from your hand. During the rut, there was one yr we had 3 beautiful bucks. One was a nice 4x4 another was a huge 3x3, biggest 3 point blacktail that I have seen and we had a smaller 3x3 that had palmated antlers. One of the bucks had barbed wire tangled in its antlers, my wife pulled it out by hand. I told her it was dangerous to do that but she said it wasn't a problem cause the deer was so busy eating. Anyhow, it was frustrating to go for a hike all day and not see a deer and come home to that many in your yard. I told her if she kept feeding the deer a cougar was going to show up. Well guess what? a cougar did show up one morning, 30 ft from the living room window. She stopped feeding the deer.

talking MB. Ironically, we bumped into the retired ole Jack at Home Hardware the other day in town! Yes, they are very under staffed. Only a few officers to cover a real big area. Sad, but true! Years back, we would met them in the bush on trails at any time, but now for quite a few years you never see them out there, only on the hwy or in town. Dam, it's hard to pull the wool over your eyes!;)

we just assembled 9 new deer feeders, 3 for at home here on our property and one for our sled club house yard property, one for my middle son's yard so my grand-daughters can watch the deer from their picture window, and 4 for the local forest.

I road hunt for bear. I have all that gear. The GPS is very necessary as forestry maps can be outdated. When your 80 miles back in there U also might want a satellite phone in case something happens to yur truck. I know guys that have had to walk out, took em two days before they came upon some loggers that gave em a lift out.
 
It's better to shoot them on the road then be one of those guys that under estimate how long and how hard it will be to pack ther game out
I have come across pack board left in the bush with a moose quarter Stinking And Covered in flies .
Not many guys debone and light smoke there game in the bush anymore .
I have also see wear sumone shot a moose in a swamp half gutted and abandon due to lack of planning and experience
 
Get out of your truck! I scouted a mom and calf moose pair off the road listening to the trucks going by. I shot the calf after listening to the trucks fade away as the light went down.
