Ive noticed a lack of this rifle on the forum....

Who has one? What type of accuracy are you achieving? What are you using it for ? Do you like it ?

Have my sling en route... Any source for the front sight tool? SKS front sight tool work?

Mine is pretty banged up, but I plan on using it not hanging it.
Have the matching bayo, here is a pic...
I haven't shot it yet, previous CGN memb said he had never fired either... Was VERY dirty, seemed fired. Cleaned it up.

Very nice rifles. I always thought the FR-8 took a step backwards with the straight bolt handle. My ideal FR rifle would be an FR-7 in an FR-8 stock.

I have an example of the Brazilian take on the concept which is quite similar (M968) and it's an excellent shooter.

I have a FR-7. Stock had been refinished with varnish and metal has a black paint like finish. Not sure if the metal finish was military or not. My rifle is a good shooter with cast bullets. My son and I probably put at least a couple thousand cast loads through it. My understanding is that the 7's are based on a 93 action and were really chambered for the 7.62 CTME round which is same as 7.62 NATO but loaded to lower pressures. I never fired 308 factory or equivalent jacketed hand loads in mine.

Interesting sight set up on these rifles. Make a good truck or ATV gun. Used to see the odd really mint FR-8 around at gun shows. They sold cheap in the old days (like a lot of other guns). Paid 75 bucks for mine.

Was thinking of refinishing this stock. I love the diopter rear sight. Cant wait to sight it in... I need to re blue some areas... Any suggested brands ?

I also think the straight bolt handle is a backwards step

I have an FR8 and I like it. It's fun to shoot. I use it to shoot beer cans at 20 to 50 m. Super cool rifle everybody has to ask about it. The rear adjustable sight that turns is cool. One of my favourite rifles.

Cool rifle. Terrible action.

Well, rephrase. Every one I've tried including the practically unfired one I use to own has had the grittiest and roughest large ring mauser action ever created.

Damn shame, they are cool rifles but I don't think there's a rougher 98 action out there I've ever come across.

Leave it the way it is?

There are arguments that a straight bolt handle is faster with more leverage for #### on open.

I have an FR7 built on a 1923 Oviedo action.
I'm using starting loads for .308 Win in it. Using Hornady 150 grain FMJ bullets and WW 748 powder. Old action, I'll take it easy on the old girl. I'm an old fart and my eyesight isn't what it used to be, so I have the rear sight set on the 200 yd hole and adjusted the front sight to put me about 2" high at 100 yds. If I'm having a good day, I can get 2" - 3" groups at 100 yds with it.

I built my own front sight adjuster from a short length of steel brake line and my Dremel tool. Works well. I think it was 5/8" brake line (can't remember.......or even find my tool right now)

My stock was pretty dirty and ugly when I got it. I spent some time with linseed oil and steel wool cleaning the crud off of it.

Forgot to put this in earlier...............I took the crappy trigger out and replaced it with a Dayton-Traister trigger. Very nice 2.5 lb trigger pull now

I am one to agree, I find that when shooting, I am able to operate the straight bolt handle rifles with more ease then the turned down bolt examples I have. It could be that many of my rifles were built with straight bolts and I am just more use to them perhaps.

It didn't seem that bad, mind you all my rifles are savage ! lol

I find the same. Easier to operate a straight bolt handle on a milsurp for me.

Not to cramp anyone's style... but the FR7 has a bent bolt because it's converted from a M1916, the FR8 has a straight bolt because it's converted from the M43.

Yes, that's right. Still an interesting debate. Just a matter of preference, I guess. I believe I read once that the FR-7 can be a bit dangerous of a rifle with hot loads, or something to that effect.

FR8 is an upgrade to a stronger made rifle than the FR7. It has to be one of the worst rifle conversions that was obsolete even before the idea was thought up but it still is a cool rifle. Was it ever used in combat and if it was how did it do?

Fr8 worst rifle conversions ever ?! Whaaat ? Hence why the ruger gunsite scout is a modern version of it ? lol

Side note, looked at barrel, inside is bright and clean. outside is smooth no bulging or signs of any thing bad... Might skip the smith and just take some shots. Shouldn't blow up in my face ! lol

I prefer the FR7, the FR8's seem rougher. I load mine with 300 savage data, I made my own sight tool out of a fencing staple.

I would say the ruger scout took after the lee Enfield n0. 5 Jungle Carbine I think more than the FR8
