Did I luck out at my local crappy tire? (sks)

I have almost exactly the same, 1950 Tula with lam. stock and black bayonet. Another sign it is a refirb, laminated stock but pre-laminated butt plate:

Mine has laminated stock but the butt plate is like the one on the left.

I paid $300 for mine, but it has a spring-driven firing pin.

Nice gun, I really like the black bayo, I have 2 that I bought from Fredericton CTC about a year and a half ago, on sale for $150. I should have bought 10!;)

Funny, when I got my lammy 1950 from Lever about 4 years ago, black bayonet SKS's were considered ugly and undesirable. I ended up getting one with a black bolt assembly, and removed the cruddy bbq finish from it.

There are different types of the so calle BBQ paint but I have seen some nice ones, and tough coating! My blue bayo's are blued but I have a couple with the new coatings!

Are you talking about the rough-textured paint? I saw one SKS like that yesterday, and at first, could not decide if it was a paint at all, looked more like powder coating.
I've read that the sure way to tell is the crown: if the bluing is original, the crown will be bare metal. The one I saw yesterday had a black crown, blued or painted.

The manager at this crappy was quite nice, he escorted me to the storage room where i rummaged through the sks crate. Hence I picked this one. Though they had a few nice ones.

It is nicknamed BBQ paint. It's a coating put on during refurbishment. Like a powder coat.

Sounds good to me ^^! I recently tried to remove the paint from one of my SKS and found three different qualities of paint: The barrel and reciever; powder-coat,
very tough, won't come off. The internal parts; good quality black paint, came off with some difficulty using acetone. The mag and gas tube; poor quality paint
that might have been spray can paint, came off not too hard with acetone.

Dunno if I'd call it luck, since finding a nice SKS still isn't that hard to do. If the price was in the $200-225 range, I'd call it a good deal.

No, but being allowed into the back of the store, into the employees only area to rummage through a crate isn't a common thing to happen at CT either, so I'd call THAT aspect lucky.

That's a refurb but a good quality and worth about $280 right now but will be worth double that in 5 years. Should be $600 in 5 years. I love the black bayonet and it has a nice stock. I own a similar one.

How does one figure it will be worth $600.00 in five years.
I can get one right now for $229.00 plus tax of course at my local gun shop.
About $129.00 to much, but thats just my opinion....

If you compare it to pretty much anything else, its a hard deal to beat. Much cheaper than any other semi-auto centerfire rifle, and this one even happens to use cheap ammo to boot. The fact that it can used to hunt deer with, and you've got a pretty capable little lead thrower(pending you can get real hunting ammo for it lol). Hell, my 22 and cheap pump shotgun didn't cost any less than my SKS did.

Of course, that sort of thing doesn't interest everyone. If your a shotgun guy, or a bolt-action guy, or a Ruger #1 guy, (or an accuracy guy lol) then it might not appeal to you. Not everyone wants a 10-pound club that spits brass 20 feet away, and most people wouldn't pick this as their first choice to hunt with (or last choice for some lol)
