Am I over pressure?

I just fired some if my first hand loads, I am loading .223 with 55 gr v max and varget. I started with the starting charge in my manual and some of my primers seem to be flattened a bit. Not why, or if this is out of the normal

Seems you're near the max load.

Load data for 55gr vmax

Hornady manual vol 7, Page 155, 55-gr Hornady bullets for .223 Remington

#22271 V-MAX
Winchester WSR
Rem 700 bolt gun
C.O.L. = 2.250"
Varget
2800 = 22.8-gr
2900 = 23.7-gr
3000 = 24.5-gr
3100 = 25.5-gr
3200 = 26.4-gr MAX

Primers are generally a poor indicator of pressure. Different brands will flatten and crater at different pressures. In my experience, CCI are normally the hardest and Federal the softest.
Sticky bolt lift and ejector swipe are more consistent, but by the time you get them, you are in a high pressure area.

25.5 varget is almost at max, but still under. I find that because it's a stick powder , I need to use my trickler, if not the charges can be all over the place. My buddy had some hot 22-50, the first sign he got of over pressure was the bolt lift, it was a b!tch to open.

Doubt you'd be over pressure at that load. Hodgdon shows 27.5 as max. I've shot alot of 53gr vmax with varget from 25.7 to 27.5 seated at 2.244" and zero pressure signs. Used to run 60gr bergers with 27gr and seated so the bottom of the bullet was at the bottomof the neck again no pressure

Hodgdon actually.

55 gr bullet, Starting Load - 25.5 gr of Varget. Max 27.5 compressed.

I've read that Hornady data is consistently on the conservative side. Lawyers eh.

That is for a 55gr Speer soft point. Look at the Flat Base one (which the Vmax is closer to) starting load of 22.8 and max 24 compressed.

The only Speer .224 55gr bullet with a soft point that I see on their site has a flat base as well. I must admit I'm no reloading guru. Looks the same as a vmax to me just soft point vs ballistic tip.

The Barnes TSX load you pointed out is certainly less. TSX's are mono metal bullets and longer for their weight and as my understanding cause higher pressures.

The Vmax and TSX and SFIRE for that matter are completely different in material and construction so you cant compare them when it comes to loading I would think.
