Not enough snow

That looks like a really neat machine, I'm surprised it doesn't have a much larger motor. We have a few similar looking machines around here, you see them out on Lake Simcoe for ice fishing in the winter. They also have very low ground pressure and can traverse the lake very easily.
 
How does it go about turning? When you turn the wheel does it take power off of one of the tracks like a dozer? Also Kennedy engineering makes adapters to run all sorts of different engines behind vw transaxles. Popular with Sandrails and buggys as well as buses/vans and beetles. The Subaru boxer is a common swap which would be a good way to break things...... Awesome rig!

Each half shaft has a bevel gear on it that engages in a vertical shaft. At the top of each shaft is a large V belt pulley, a V belt connects these two pullies. These are variable pitch pullies. When you turn the steering wheel one pulley opens, the other closes this let's one half shaft turn faster and the other one slower this has the effect of steering the machine. The bonus is that with no breaking there is no loss of power. This is importent as there is no power to spare!

That is a snow deflector. It wipes the snow of the underneath of the track and shoots it out the side off the track. With out that in wet sticky snow the snow would ball up in the track and under extreme conditions do some damage. Need to keep the track clean to prevent freezing up at night. I made it from two $5 kids "crazy carpets" and a few pop rivets, it works superbly.
