First long range rifle, could use a few pointers

The point I was trying to make about distance is that 500 yds is a lot easier than 1000 yds due to the extra environmental factors involved. Wind, mirage etc are a major ##### out beyond 1000 yds. Long range marksmanship requires a lot of practice as a result.

I concur... the OP wants to spend limited resource on a "bigger engine" and then never drive the car.

That is not going to improve his abilities one bit. He seems to think that bigger cartridge will make his journey easier... infact it will be the opposite.

With a limited budget, the best solution is just dial up the rifle, send the bullet and enjoy.

By the time he has spent the same as the new rifle, he would have the real world experience to make hits and load better.

Trigger time gains skill and he needs to do more then 20rds per month if he truly wants to get proficient.

I would probably go with the HS precision if you have shooting experience...if you have t spent much time behind a rifle I strongly recommend buying something smaller like a 308 first, even though it won't IMO have the killing power out to 1000, you can still ring steel at that range. If you get the bigger rifles right off the bat (like I did) then you can develops a flinch from the recoil which took a long time to fix and lots of rounds down range...whatever gun you buy, figure out what ammo it likes and buy lots of of it and decent glass then put as many rounds down it as possible.

If you want to learn LR shooting, better gear up to shoot alot.

If you are going to reload, you need to be a good enough shot to tune the ammo so ... you will be shooting alot.

If you want to hunt at LR, you need to be fluent in LR shooting so .... you will be shooting alot.

Not just the cost but the ability to drive the set up well. Consider a smaller cartridge for all the positives it can teach you.

Even the 22LR is a wonderful tool when shooting it at 300m..... you need to learn the ACT of shooting, then the wind reading to make hits more certain.

20rds per month... not to be the bringer of bad news, you will not get to a level of proficiency in your life time at that rate of exposure. Just because you have a fast car, doesn't mean you can drive fast.

I'm getting I go precision shooting as well. Thanks for the information. Sounds like I'm on my way. I shoot a LOT of 22 from my little bolt action savage. Probably 500-1000/month. Trying to nail down everything.

Kinda want to jump to a 223 precision rifle.

Shoot at real targets with rings. There is a reason there are no rings on a tin can, hit or miss is not good enough to know what you are doing. The 1000 target is 8 feet wide by 6 feet high, with good reason. Silver Mountain Targets are electronic and will give all the info you need, a bit pricey but okay if you can split with some friends or a club.

Just don't expect to lay down on the line at Nokomis and expect to shoot alongside everyone with that break on! Have seen it numerous times and people told either take it off or take off.

Dont worry, you wont see me at Nokomis...got a chunk of land 15 mins away from me I can shoot 1000+ yards on.
