I have an old Marlin lever action 30-30 given to me by my grandfather a long time ago. Trying to find the model of the gun anyone know how. I have the seriel number any way to use that or what. Not familiar with the gun at all so I know pretty much nothing about them.

Does the serial number have a Letter prefix? Is it on the top tang, or bottom tang under the lever, Front bottom of the frame?

If the serial number is on the top tang (wrist below the hammer) it dates from @1969-2013, when they started putting the serial number on the side of the receiver.

Earliest guns are serial ed on the bottom tang at the front of the receiver.
1910s thru 1969 letter prefix and serial numbers on bottom tang under lever.

check what the stock is made out of if its a hardwood it will be a 336w if its a 336c the stock should be walnut, as well check if it has the straight stock where you grip that will indicate early model probably a c model if it has the new pistol grip good chance it may be a w model

I found a site that I could input the serial number and it would give me a date. Told me the rifle was made in 1898. Other then that I am lost. Anyone know where I could find information on these old Marlins

I have an 1893 made in 1902 in 32 special ,I am told there was a fire and records were lost so it is difficult to determine a manufactures date .

My serial number has 6 digits 410 are the first 3 digits

Square bolt ,I take it apart and see how it compares to the new rifles

This rifle was a work horse and it shows but a trigger that would make most shooters smile

No doesn't say special smokeless steel on it. Unless it's wore down I did not see. From the looks of it and what I can find it is a model 1890 made in 1898. Other then that it's hard to find. I sent marlin an email with the serial number to see what they can find just waiting to hear back now.

Hi Trevor: do you still have the Marlin 30/30 rifle? I have a similar one which is a 1893 model with a 20" octagonal barrel. The lever gun still shoot reasonable well. It is an old gun, 114years old! Made in 1903-1904. Did you find out more details on your gun? Somehow I think it's also an 1893. Enjoy!

You can find out more about your Marlin here:
www.oldguns.net/sn_php/marlinlookup.php
Also if you pay $9.95 you can get detail records on your original gun email back to you:
www.marlinfirearmsrecords.com

Hope this help!

No doesn't say special smokeless steel. That wouldn't be on the barrel as 30-30 came out in smokeless powder. Should be a 1893 made in about 1908.

My old 1893 in 30/30 was marked “smokeless”, many are. If I recall correctly it was from 1910

My model 1893, which was a 30-30, is marked "Special Smokeless Steel" it was made in 1906. It is now working just great as a 38-55.
The original barrel looked like a creosoted stovepipe, and shot more like a shotgun than a rifle.
I had Ron Smith out of Alberta do his magic on the old 30-30 barrel.
It is much better now, staying inside 3", which is about as good as I shoot open sights anyway. Eagleye.
