I just came across 5k large pistol primers. These are the same size as large rifle primers. Is there an issue using these in 308, 45-70 or 6.5?

While the large primer pockets are the same diameter, they are different depths. LPP in a rifle cartridge can result in light strikes and FTF. LRP in a pistol case results in protruding primers, a real pita when using in a revolver or worse, a slamfire in an autoloader.

I have used Large Magnum Pistol primers in my 45/70 without issue. It just doesn't develop enough pressure to cause any issues. I wouldn't suggest using them in higher pressure cases.

One way to find out is to get ahold of a fired primer, pick out the anvil insert and measure the thickness of the wall. If they are within a couple of thou of the thickness of the regular Large Rifle primers, give it at try. Supposedly pistol primers aren't as hot as rifle primers but I would be hard pressed to tell the difference. In my M1 Carbine I have used both but those are small primers. I also use Large Magnum pistol primers when loading lead plinkers in several cartridges up to 30-06. I have shot thousands of these through a bolt action 30-30 without a blown or even flowing primer.

I am aware of the dimensional differences of LRP & LPP ,,,,,,,,,,, but are the rifle primers much hotter than the pistol primers.
Some pistols loaded will LRP will still fit the gun , but is there a safety hazard , due to any higher pressure ?

you can use pistol primers in low pressure rounds like the 30 30, 35 rem, 32 special etc but avoid using in high pressure rounds like the 308. the cup is thinner on pistol primers.

Papaclaude, I use large pistol primers in my 45-70 Marlin regularly. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether they are magnum, or regular, I have never had the slightest indication of any problem.

Thanx. That's likely the one I will use them with.

Well this was tried in Webley Mk 6 , .455 & it raised the velocity from 700 f/s to 800 f/s.
Same 6 gr. of Unique , but 1st. load with Fed.-150 primer & 2nd load with WLR primers.
According to Lyman 42 edition Reloading manual ,,,, 800 is max.
I am going back to Fed. - 150 primers. BTW ,,,,,,,,,,,, no issues where seen with WLR primers
other than the extra 100 ft./sec .
