Did I luck out at my local crappy tire? (sks)

Free floating isn't correct for that year.
I thought so too, but then what about this info:

-Type 1 Firing pin. Spring 1949 - part1951 (above right, top).
-Type 2 Firing pin. Non-spring/milled two sides Part1950 - part1953 (above right pic, middle).
-Type 3 Firing pin. Non-spring/milled three sides, part1953 - 1956 (above right pic, bottom).

It's from here:

So looks like 1950-1951 can have both spring and floating firing pin.

Its a nice laminate refurb. Congrats - they are really nice carbines.

As per above post, some had spring type firing pins and some did not. The free floating ones have 2 milled sides.

If Im not mistaken, the OPs rifle has the type-2 gas block, which would imply the barreled receiver is from 1950-52. Because this part cannot be changed, unlike the bolt carrier, this helps to accurately date the gun... right??

Why can't a gas block be changed? Drive out the pins and drive it off with a brass hammer.

My bad, it is removable, even if not particularly easily... It still seems unlikely to me that they would go through the effort to replace a gas block, as you'd also have to remove the front sight, and then reinstall both. I'd expect something with a bad gas block would be used for parts to refurb other rifles...? Moreover, if it WAS refurbed, wouldn't it more than likely end up with a newer style?

Who know how far the russians refurbed some guns. If there was a box of gas blocks, would it really matter if it was a new style vs an old style if it worked? If they had old gas blocks that hadn't been used but we're functional in armourer kits why throw them out?

Yep, the samples coming through now are all over the place, I have a 53 izzy with a non Chrome barrel ( I think ) and was looking at another 53 heavy refurb with good blueing but the dust/bolt cover is painted black, not BBQ/ permacoat! And as I was saying before, there is a bit more rust ( patina ;)) on them,, still worth $169.99 all day long!

Yeah fair enough. I was thinking any old style blocks would have been used up years before the refurbing would have happened, but who knows.

A few close ups of mine. Also I dont know if this holds of any importants. Ive seen another sks at my crappy tire with a simple star marking right beside the serial number on the receiver. Thoughts?

This is the only obvious marking on the stock.

If you like your toy, then you lucked out. Simple. As per collectible, then no, you failed measurableiy!! Hee hee! Kidding. Enjoy and shoot your toy and have fun.

Aw, where can I find an uber-rare highly collectable one-of-a-kind SKS?
Out of the millions of them that were produced there must be one somewhere.

No, but being allowed into the back of the store, into the employees only area to rummage through a crate isn't a common thing to happen at CT either, so I'd call THAT aspect lucky.

Allowing the public into your back of house firearm lockup is an asinine practice.
A local CT here was doing that, then the Store Manager found out and flipped his lid. Funny thing is, the staff were so clueless they didn't see what the big deal was. f:P:

she is a beauty , to make a modern SKS using same material used in old ones you are talking about at least $900 rifle may be more, very reliable and rugged .. I will take it over the AK :) anytime any day twice on Sunday

Whats the deal with the black bayo? Are these refurb?

My local CT has a bunch of Supergrade SKSs that are all matching and have black bayos.. are these refurb?

Does an r after the date mean refurb?

Thanks (not trying to steal your thread OP).
