Pure lead powder coated boolits

OK, I have to admit - I'm partial to a big chunk of pure lead for taming critters. They open up well, and critters invariably end up seeing things my way - which is that the dinner table is a fine place to be.

Now, I have a 45-70 Guide Gun, and I've been very happy with the performance of the 325 gr. LeverEvolution ammo. There are only 2 shortcomings - way too light, and not pure lead. So now, I am going to try powder coating, and I am going to cast some 405 and 500 gr. What I need to know from the experts out there: Can I cast them in pure lead? Do I have to water drop them? Can I push them to max velocity without leading? I'm guessing 1700-1800 fps? Will the lead perform as well in a critter as uncoated? Have any of you used PC pure lead loads for man-critter negotiations?
 
I've only used air cooled WW and PC for handguns loaded light for steel shooting. Looks like you get to be the guinea pig.

I don't see why they would be any diffrent than uncoated lead on the target. As for whether or not it will lead up, cast and coat up a few and give 'em a whirl. Let us know the results.

haven't tried PC pure lead in my 45-70 GG but have used pure lead 440 grain hollow points for hunting and they preformed very well.
i dont think you will have a leading issue if the bullet bore fit is correct.
try shooting some into some media that you can recover them from, a green thick log or lots of phone books stacked tight.
would be interesting to see the results.
 
for pistol stuff i usually do 50/50 pure to WW, never had any issues with it including the stock glock barrel.
 
If you are looking to do it for a couple hunting loads here and there, check out paper patching. With paper patch and pure lead you can push them just as fast as jacketed. I personally paper patch for my 30-06 for hunting and yah the accuracy is AMAZING, shoots far better then I can. Just be warned paper patching is VERY time consuming so for target shooting not worth it, but for hunting I highly recommend you give it a try.

Not Pure lead but accuracy sure is good.

Thanx for the offer. I just got my PC supplies in, so I'll give them a try. My cast "pure" lead 405 gr. were getting ragged one-hole groups. That was in the 45-70, and only loaded with Trail Boss, but now I'm going to try working up a load for speed and accuracy.

The group shot was with imr 3031, i use imr 4198 at around 1500fps using 38gr. My groups are not as good as those shown but its easier on my shoulder than running 1800fps.

I got tool blue, as I read somewhere that it gives really good results. Might feel a little foolish with blue bullets, but what the heck - wouldn't be the first time I look foolish, and this time, I'll be sober.
 
Put my order in today for tool blue. Just have to wait till the 8th of March. I noticed some guys are placing them upright on the cookie sheet and some just dump them on the sheet. Does it matter what way to do it. Lining them up one at a time is more time consuming vs dumping. Just looking for opinions.
 
I've now tried both methods. Standing up produces very nice results and even coverage. Dumping them on a wire basket without letting them stack on each other worked but leaves small voids where they touch the wire basket. I can actually get more through the toaster oven by standing them up vs. the wire basket method, although I can drink many more beers using the basket. As for how they shoot, I haven't got that far yet. Biggest issue I have come across is humidity. It will make the powder not stick to your boolits and if you try to bake them with the little that does stick, they look like sh!t.

A 45/70 doesn't have to open anything, it's wide enough. Save your pure stuff that has to open to a 45/70 size
