Looks like I've got her figured. I am not sure if the stock metal is worn or if the stock metal from an 870 super mag just is completely incompatable with an 870 forestock - I suspect it is the former but cannot be sure. When I used another member's forestock metal from an old wingmaster the gun started feeding 100%. I also noted faster feeding with a more powerful tube spring and also suspect that my old tired spring does not help- although I have ruled it out as being the primary cause.
What I need is stock metal from a wingmaster or perhaps an express - I don't want to risk using one from another super mag (although I don't think it's a comparability issue because I did switch back to my stock setup earlier and still had issues). However here is a picture of the wingmaster metal (here it is on the wood forestock) vs my old super mag metal.

You will note, if keen of eye, that the tabs that engage the shell stop hands are located in different spots. I imagine this is causing the shell to feed slightly earlier, which is advantageous in my case.
Can someone confirm for me that if I buy forestock metal for a newer gun that the tabs will be in the same location as is shown in the above pic on the wood Forestock? I am just not sure what Remington has done over the years but this seems to be what I need. If someone has one for sale let me know.
Also what is this piece technically called?
