Opinions on 870 FTF problem after stock change

Looks like I've got her figured. I am not sure if the stock metal is worn or if the stock metal from an 870 super mag just is completely incompatable with an 870 forestock - I suspect it is the former but cannot be sure. When I used another member's forestock metal from an old wingmaster the gun started feeding 100%. I also noted faster feeding with a more powerful tube spring and also suspect that my old tired spring does not help- although I have ruled it out as being the primary cause.

What I need is stock metal from a wingmaster or perhaps an express - I don't want to risk using one from another super mag (although I don't think it's a comparability issue because I did switch back to my stock setup earlier and still had issues). However here is a picture of the wingmaster metal (here it is on the wood forestock) vs my old super mag metal.

You will note, if keen of eye, that the tabs that engage the shell stop hands are located in different spots. I imagine this is causing the shell to feed slightly earlier, which is advantageous in my case.

Can someone confirm for me that if I buy forestock metal for a newer gun that the tabs will be in the same location as is shown in the above pic on the wood Forestock? I am just not sure what Remington has done over the years but this seems to be what I need. If someone has one for sale let me know.

Also what is this piece technically called?

That seems really odd. Are you sure the Wingmaster tube assembly will eject a fired 3.5" hull before the gun double-feeds? The SuperMag parts have the operating notches at different locations for a reason.

It was probably difficult to get the gun to work reliably with all 3 different shell lengths. Thus the rumblings of poor reliability in the 3.5" guns we've heard.

Anyway, if you're only using 2 3/4" shells, just put a Wingmaster forend bar assembly in.

Casey at TacOrd will have everything you need as far as spare parts.

Too bad... Wasn't there just a whole single lot of 870 parts that came up for super cheap? Someone scored on that one...

Umm...ya the extra length to the tab is probably for 3.5" shells. This gun now wears a barrel with only a 3" chamber so I think I am going to go the shorter route for reliability. To be clear there is no length difference in the metal itself, just where the tabs sit.

Another interesting fact- the super mag metal allowed the wingmaster to feed fine (note original bolt won't go back in this way though) - it just won't work in my gun anymore.

Picked up a new "forend tube assembly" from TSE, luckily they had one in stock. I believe it is from an express mag (not super). Anyway, tested the gun in one of the shooting bays and it is 100% with 2 3/4 and 3" shells. Hope this helps someone else down the line who is having feeding issues.

Metal tab locations were again a bit different from the wingmaster which must be 2 3/4 only- although with the assembly in my gun 3" fed fine as well.
