My grandfather had a savage 99 in 300 savage that was stolen over 50 years ago back in the days of having gun racks in your back window as he puts it. He found 2 boxes of ammo that he still had hidden in a box and got the itch to own one again and can't figure out why it was never replaced. So he has tasked me with finding one for him. I put up an EE add and a nice fellow alerted me to one at a store in Alberta. The problem when I sent my grandfather the link was it was a 22" barrel and he is sure that his was a 27" barrel. I have never seen a savage 99 advertised with that long of a barrel but I am not about to tell him he's wrong so I ask you did they ever make a savage 99 with 27" barrel in 300 savage and I keep looking or do I need to find a way to remind him his had a shorter barrel?

Thanks in advance

Jason

Your ad said you were looking for a 99 featherweight, they only came in 22" barrels.

Sure he had the model right?

The 99 EG and model R would have had a 24" barrel.

No such animal with a 27" barrel.

All the literature I have been able to consult shows that the .300 Savage came in various barrel lengths (depending on the model), but the maximum was a 24" barrel. There were some earlier models that pre-date the .300 Savage that came in 26" barrels, with custom factory options of longer barrels, but I've never heard of a .300 with that long of a barrel. I suppose it may be possible that it was a custom job (factory or otherwise), but I'm not knowledgeable enough to say one way or the other. Mad Dog is one of our Savage experts, and he's already spoken, so I'd agree with him.

That's what he asked for in the initial email. Honestly he is in his mid 80's and might not be remembering right. I will explain the model numbers and barrel lengths and let him decide what I look for. I expected him to buy that one you sent me so getting back an email saying his had that long of barrel and to keep looking took me by surprise.

I think back in the old days you could special order a barrel at a certain rate per inch but have never even seen special order rifle with a barrel in an odd number.

I myself own a Savage model 1895 with a special order 30" barrel, but like you said, most of the special order barrels are before the 300 Savage was introduced in 1920. The only exception could have been an early model 99B which would have came in that caliber with a 26" bbl on it.

Any chance you can get a description of the rifle or would he have an old photo of it? If he had a picture of it I can identify the gun at a glance.

No pictures but when I asked if he could remember the model number he is 100% sure it was a fw and he remembers buying it cause it was light. So he conceded that it must have been a 22" barrel but then went on to say that he always remembered having trouble getting it to fit in the gun case thats why he thinks it was a long barrel. So I am still confused. He did confirm that it was an off the shelf rifle not special order. He seems like he will be happy if I can find a FW so that is what i will do for now.

What kind of serial range is the solid frame in Mike?

The 1925 T/D has gotta be a 99B which is a rather uncommon gun to find, only seen one other true 99B in Canada and it was in 303 Sav.
