I can't comment on how Lever Arms customer service is at the store (I have not been there in person), but I've had very good dealings with them via phone, e-mail and mail order. One time I had a problem with an SVT 40 that got damaged in transport by the courier and they compensated me for it. They could have told me it wasn't their problem and to deal with the shipper, but they took steps to make sure I was satisfied with my purchase and I have to respect them for that.
As for what to buy, for a shooter I'd recommend a 1950 with a spring loaded firing pin. Just my two cents, but I prefer the extra little bit of safety though any SKS is fine as long as you properly clean your rifle.
This is an excellent forum with plenty of great threads written by knowledgeable people. Do some homework, read some of the 'stickys' about SKS rifles, learn from the pros - in the end you'll be a heck of a lot more knowledgeable walking into the store and you'll appreciate your rifle even more.
Good luck with your purchase,
Brookwood
