So one of my first gun I will get is SKS. So should I get it from Lever Arms or Canadian Tire? What do I need to watch to buy? (I have read something about number matching, etc?)

Thanks in advance!

Lever has more in stock and pretty bad service.

IF you know how to pick a SKS you have better odds there. However, for a first SKS, it's unlikely you know how to pick a good one.

Last time I was there they let me pick 3 to handle but could look at them all through the glass.

Also consider Reliable Gun and West Coast Hunting in Richmond.

I can't comment on how Lever Arms customer service is at the store (I have not been there in person), but I've had very good dealings with them via phone, e-mail and mail order. One time I had a problem with an SVT 40 that got damaged in transport by the courier and they compensated me for it. They could have told me it wasn't their problem and to deal with the shipper, but they took steps to make sure I was satisfied with my purchase and I have to respect them for that.

As for what to buy, for a shooter I'd recommend a 1950 with a spring loaded firing pin. Just my two cents, but I prefer the extra little bit of safety though any SKS is fine as long as you properly clean your rifle.

This is an excellent forum with plenty of great threads written by knowledgeable people. Do some homework, read some of the 'stickys' about SKS rifles, learn from the pros - in the end you'll be a heck of a lot more knowledgeable walking into the store and you'll appreciate your rifle even more.

Good luck with your purchase,

Brookwood

Check out Hi Caliber in Mission. Worth the drive. I picked up a beautiful sks. They are a bit more spends but unissued, unfired, all numbers matching and gorgeous! Brand new just been in storage for 60 year. You won't be disappointed! I know I wasn't!

I agree totally with this suggestion. Great service and they know their stuff. They can probably also sell you one with the adapter on it for the 10 rd pistol magazines and they usually have the magazines in stock as well.

Weimajack is also a great source of beautiful SKSs if he has any available

IF you chose to go to Lever...I would simply due to the number of rifles to select from, take a good bright LED flashlight with you. Use it to look at all the rifles through the glass, for defects, forcematched numbers, stock repairs and so on. This is the easiest way to narrow down which rifles you would want to view when the cabinet is opened. pick your rifles to view...I've scored some real beauties this way!

Lever or reliable, forget crappy tire or Italian. I was just in at reliable earlier this week and they had a nice 1950 sks, Tula, light refurb, birch stock & handguard, blued not parkerized. There were a couple 50's and 51 & a 52 or a 53. The one 1950 stood out, $199.99 iirc.

Lever has some real nice sks on the rack, worth checking out as well. I've always had good experiences at lever.
