So what's the cheapest way to store my long guns without them rusting up?
I got gun socks, silica cat litter, coffee filters, vaseline, and mobil 1. I usually toss in some cat litter, coffee filters, and long guns in gun socks but lately I've been worried about my babies.
My budget is 20 dollars.

I'm thinking I can find a big cardboard box and toss em in with more cat litter but I can't find big cardboard boxes anywhere.
 
Store in a dry place and lightly oil after use or when put in storage. If in a safe, buy the moisture traps at dollar store, they work and last about a month or more, dependant on humidity level in your home.
 
I guess I'll oil them and put them in a closet instead of using a gun sock. I've read some nightmare stories about gun socks and rust.

edit- Turns out I have soft gun cases not gun socks. Soft cases are well known to trap moisture and cause rust. Gun socks have mixed reviews.

With cat litter there is no way of drying it out ( also at 5-10$ a box way more than the re useable rice ) I use some socks filled with white rice. If they get damp I just put in the oven for a little bit on the lowest temp to dry them out.

At 20$ surely you can pick up a small thing of rice, use your old socks and some oil. Or can get some plastic wrap and a tube of axle grease ( if you want long term )
 
I have a dehumidifier and a nice coat of oil. A few moisture traps in the safe and I have never had a problem with rust even with long term storage at up to 4 months
 
Invest in a bottle of chain and bar oil...... Will stay on your guns for a good long time and keep them from rusting....

I was going to tell you to buy rags too, but since you are poor I wager you have many handy..... Lol
 
In my opinion, a closet works fine. Follow all safe storage requirements. Refer to the law.

Keep them clean, wiped with an oily clean rag. In a high humidity environment (like SW Manitoba in May-July) I successfully kept my collection fine for a couple of years. Keep the closet for your storage, don't put your wet snow boots in there. Add a bucket of "damprid" for about $20 if you really find the need. Use, clean, wipe with oily rag, store, repeat as much as possible. It doesn't have to be expensive or excessive.

Don't long term store your guns in a case or a sock. That's trouble!

I've used gun socks for storage for years and never a problem. I have had firearms in gun socks, inside hard gun cases with foam, for years.
 
You are overthinking it. Buy a can of G96 gun cleaner from Crappy Tire. Spray it on your guns and wipe it off with a rag. Repeat this a few times. Every month or so repeat this process.

No need to get coffee filters and kitty litter involved. People have already made products that work well
 
So love, care, and oil will prevent my ###y boys from getting rust? It's a good thing I love oiling. I'm going to cover my babies with some ripped pajamas as a 0 dollar makeship gun sock.

Well dang good to know, I've got all my pellet rifles sitting in soft cases. They aren't anything fancy but I still like to keep my stuff in good shape.

Poor or not.
To protect steel on the cheap in a high moisture environment, oil it up nicely then put in in plastic sack. It will keep like new, I know because this is exactly what I do with my smaller machine Tools on Vancouver Island.
