Sks... Not pinned

Let's say you received an SKS that appeared to never have been pinned... theoretically of course. No signs of welds, or of the little "leg" having been cut off.

If one fashioned a wooden block to "pin" the magazine to 5 rounds, would that suffice for legality?

Best way is to just tac a leg onto the swing arm that doesn't interfere with the leveler.

When Marstar sold the Yugo SKS guns back in the day, they epoxied a sheet metal tab into the mag cover that limited the travel of the swing arm. They old lots that way, FWIW.

Yep. Epoxy is designed to be a permanent solution (though it seldom is).
If he wants to use it, he'd better do something that at least feels permanent.

It beats the hell out of Barney Fife seizing your rifle, cuffing you and hauling you off to share a cell with Otis.

I understand that the pin or block has to be permanently fixed to the magazine, such as by welding or riveting.
When one of these should get broken off, I think we would need to repair it very well, not with wood.
Of course, I have never had my magazines inspected - so I have no real idea what would pass inspection.

Switching mags would be the simplest way, but Id make a block from HDPE plastic and epoxy it in place. That way there would be no drilling holes or using rivets.

This is what i was thinking too. Someone is in possession of a prohibited device, and he should either block/pin that mag or destroy it to avoid any troubles...

Just curious, how many babies did this unpinned sks kill today? It ridiculous we have to worry about stupid crap like this. Unpinned magazines in a safe in the basement on a 60 year old rifle are not a threat to anyone.

50 000 000 000 000 000 babies. Just today. Twice that yesterday.

Nobody is arguing whether the laws are dumb, we are just advising the OP that he (or his friend whatever) may be on the wrong side of the law and if he doesn't like to take unnecessary risks then he should deal with the mag appropriately.
