I don't get how a weather warrior 16 is $650 at cabelas regular price and these axis are 450-575$
That weather warrior is twice the gun
I would guess the ww 16 is older inventory kicking around from before the cdn dollar went into free fall. Just guess though
I've been following cabelas looking for one in a 204 but never seem to have it. They used to be a $850 gun than they were $699 now $650. There calibers are constantly changing online tho so I'm not sure if it's old stock
I'm no hater of inexpensive rifles. I think it's great a fellow can buy two or even three rifles for the relative price of what a Remington used to cost in the day.
So, I checked out an axis (with a completely open mind) at a local retailer and I found it to be basically horrible in terms of ergonomics, smoothness and it's trigger.
As a basement gunplumber I know I could have spent a Saturday shortening and stiffening the stock, smoothing the action, and working the trigger. But why? For like $50 more a guy can get a Rem 783 or a Savage 11/111 on sale and you've got such a better rifle that would need none of that.
If I pick up an 80 year old milsurp sporter for $150, I'm totally find spending a weekend rebuilding it into a functional hunting rig; but if I'm buying a new rifle, I'd better not have to do any more than adjust a trigger.
Junk izz junk and that's awll there izz too-it.
Right up there with them yung puppie 10-22's.
Gaaaaaaaaad, I'm start'in tuh sownd like an ole cuss.
If you think the axis has a smooth action, you have never worked a smooth action
Yeah well its all price related, isn't it now?
I'm sorry, but that "paddle a canoe" line made me laugh.
I've got a Fender acoustic that I've been saying that about for 30 years.
If I pick up an 80 year old milsurp sporter for $150, I'm totally fine spending a weekend rebuilding it into a functional hunting rig; but if I'm buying a new rifle, I'd better not have to do any more than adjust a trigger.
No, it isn't..... But yes it is..... A smooth action is a smooth action.....
If you want to say that the axis has a smooth action for the price, I can't argue that...... Because everything at its price point has a rough action..... Compared to everything at an upper price point.....
But to say the savage axis has a smooth action as a "generality" is false..... Jmop....
I personally think they should have never made the axis and stuck with the Stevens 200..... At least the Stevens wasn't so fugly....
Further to the title of this thread, what's with everyone accusing us that don't like the axis of being a "snob"?........ Life is expensive these days.... I cut corners where I can.... But I won't if it lessens my experience.... Or if I feel the cost of poor quality may come back to bite me in the ass.....
Ahhh yes, the snob as those who are willing to pay a little more for something better are referred to as. The only snob is the person who calls those who are willing or can afford a bit more a snob because they are neither willing to spend a bit more or are jealous of those who can.
Last summer I was approached one evening at the trap club by a young fellow who was new to shooting. He had been using an H&R single shot that was quite short in barrel length and he was having a heck of a time trying to connect with the clay targets. After a round he approached me with a number of questions about how to hit targets and next about my gun and its design. I sat with him and answered all his questions. Eventually he got around as everyone seems to about price. I told him about 5K and he looked at me with shock/horror and said I can buy a car for that much money. I said yes you probably can but how old, what kind of mileage and what will it be worth five years and 50,000 more km's from now?
