'53 IZZY Test Pics

Very nice. Not sure where you bought it from, but it would be worth it to call the store and ask them to check the other rifles they have for the correct mag. More than once I have seen two rifles in the same crate with their mags swapped. I think they pull them all fr to pin them r possibly during inections, and assemble them with parts from other rifles in the same crate! Seriously, ask f they will check, it would be a shame to miss out on having the matching mag with a 53 Izhevsk.

They come in cardboard boxes with these guys now but am checking, they have some more coming in an I will be checking, I was thinking of starting a thread to see if we can match up a few of these mags, it would be a bit arduous but worth it if a few people get their mags matched again! It was CTC. I have a 55 and another 53 izzy on hold but they are both refurbed, still a good deal!

I helped a friend pick out his first SKS about 2 months ago, I had my eye on a nice one so showed it to him, I thought it was a birch stock letter series in nice condition, as we looked at it I realized it was non refurb, we were going to get a look at more in the storage room when I also realized it was laminated which it would have to be for non refurb!! The Cosmo and lacquer were so dark, the store didn't realize all this! I told my friend if he didn't buy it I would and that's as far as we needed to go he is enjoying it now! So the thread about buying SKS that we were all yakking on last week taught me a few things, I did not know that the k series was fairly rare,,,guess what his is, big ol K 1958! He is away at work but promised to get some nice close pics when he gets back! The only downers are the mismatched Mag and export marks! I would say that it hadn't been fired it is that nice, no slop in the stock!

Here are a few pics of my friends non-refurb 1958 K Letter Series SKS...

No the mag is not matching, sadly!

Too bad about the mag - probably swapped by accident. How about the electro pen on the piston, gas tube and rear sight? Also, is there any electro pen numbers on the butt stock ?

In any event, congrats. That is a very nice carbine.

I think all piston gas tubes are electro, it's my friends rifle although I hope to get one as nice, butt pad looks electro and not sure why because they aren't supposed to be serialized as far as I know!

is the 53 izzy rearer than the 54.
I believe the 54 is most common and the 53 izzy the more rare of the Izhevsk SKS, based on the stickie at the top of the red rifle forum page, the Kurgan did a nice job on collecting serial # 's and info on years/ volume etc. Also if you haven't looked through it, another stickie by Curtton with FAQs and a huge amount of info on differences within the Russian rifles! These guys put a lot of work into the research and we are still finding out more all the time, like we used to think the SKS without a year marked on them were 55/56. Now the common thought is that they went to lettering the SKS in 56,57,58! The letter at the end of the serial # on the right side of the receiver tells the year it was made!

yesterday I found out that a local CTC has SKS on for $149.99!! I bought a 1953 izzy right away, they are birch stock refurbs with parkerizing, of the ones I got to see, they are average refurbs, some have stock repairs, some have lightly refurbed stocks, my izzy has a 1952 Tula stock! It was sanded lightly so you can still see the star and the date plus the cartouche on the right side, kinda funny! This morning I went back and got to see a couple more, I picked out a nice 54 izzy this time to go with the 53! The best thing about this batch is that they are very tight, the fit between the stock and receiver nice and snug. They are not as pretty as my 53 pictured here but for $150. You get a nice tight refurb, not bad. I might head back tomorrow to see if they have any left! I wish they had SVT there on sale!!;)

Wow....thats nuts.

Good price, I've been seeing sks locally going for $229-249 iirc. Snap em up if you can get them foe $149.
Yea, the ones you are talking about are likely laminate stocks which usually go for $20-$30 more than birch. Personally I like the birch better although I have seen some really nice dark red laminates!

Unfortunately not, birch both blued and parkerized. I've dropped into Lever Arms and Reliable within the last two weeks. Reliable had 4-5 birch in nice shape at those prices, lever has raised theirs as well. They had a mix of stocks as well as blued and parkerized in the case at $229. Prices are rising ;)

Well if you are ever in the area, our CTC in Bayers lake is having a grand opening in May, and they have 250 SKS going on for $169.99! I am hoping to get them to price match the $149.99 price. Problem is our sales tax is 15% so that takes some of the shine off the price!
