Howdy all, I'm looking to pick up another recoil assembly (handle, guide and spring) to try cycling cci quiets. I suppose the choices are to get a factory unit and cut the spring down using trial and error, or to buy an after market piece. Even with an after market spring for sub-sonic, I still might have to cut a coil or two in order to run the 710fps cci's. Anyone have any suggestions for vendors here in Canada? This is simply a plinking/hunting rifle, not a race gun lol, so I'm not looking to pay for the high end stuff. Just thought I'd see what folks have to say before I call WGP probably.

I have a lot of experience with this as I've done one of my Takedown's to cycle CCI quiets. I bought the KIDD charging handle with guide springs. Even the lightest spring had to be cut down IIRC i think it was 3 1/8 coils had to go, but every one is a bit different so its cut/test, cut/test.... Once you go down this road though i wouldn't shoot anything over standard velocity ammo with this setup as you'll get peppered and accuracy will be greatly affected when firing anything over standard velocity. I bought my KIDD stuff through DLASK but they have their own now and I don't think they carry the KIDD springs with charging handle any more, but DLASK is quality stuff and you can't go wrong with their parts. Oh I almost forgot, pop a tougher buffer in there while you have it apart, your recevier will thank you for it!

Thanks for the quick reply gmctech. Actually, the reason I want a whole recoil assembly as apposed to just a spring is because I know once I have it cut to cycle the quiets it will only be used for them. That way I can swap out the whole assembly fairly quick if I'm using hotter rounds. I have seen a few adds on here in the EE for some of the better quality parts but I'm really not looking to put alot of money into a plinker. It's actually just one of the armscor/ria clones altho I have been pleasantly satisfied with it as long as you don't consider the stock lol. Worst piece of wood and inletting I have ever seen lol
Cutting coils off a spring intended for stronger ammo will only get you so far. At some point you need to start with a softer rate spring to get the proper feel in the action and the proper behavior of the bolt. And I'm thinking that setting up a 10-22 to run with Quiets is one of those times. I'm shooting some Quiets in a couple of my antique 100 year old rimfire guns and that stuff is WEAK for recoil.
In fact I grabbed a box of what I thought was CCI SV and fed it to my S&W 41. The recoil wasn't even enough to push the case out of the chamber let alone just jam in the slide.
By all means go ahead with the idea of the subsonic spring. But be prepared to look around for something even lighter. Especially if you need to cut more than a couple of coils from it.

You likely are right since the quiets are pushing a 40 grain at only 710 listed fps. I had actually wanted to try the cci cb longs, as they are a 29 grain I believe at the same 710, so even a lighter powder charge....but can't find them around here. I likely end up buying a factory replacement and working something out fr there, even if it means another spring.

and do you have to do anything with the trigger reset springs
I am lost as to why you need a second bolt.
Cant you just swap springs back and forth?

Well, just because it's easier/faster to swap the whole assembly rather than take it apart to switch springs. The whole assembly isn't expensive as a factory part. I shoot stingers through it too so I think it's easier to have two assemblies.
Nope.... there's enough recoil and mass in the bolt to reset the hammer---- well in my own experience anyways. All that aside, I've tinkered with mine and jumped up to the BX trigger and then went at it with jeweler's rouge and and my diamond files and got it down to a solid 1.75 lb trigger . A bit light for most but knowing its a breath away from firing I'm extra special careful and it doesn't get used by anyone but myself. I've gone as far as to make a feed ramp for my factory 10 shot rotary mag for s.h.i.t.s and giggles so i can fire CB shorts.
If you ever need any help or go to the range I'm just a stones throw away from ya on the mainland. I'm not versed in the RIA 10/22's but there's a thread on here with detailed measurement comparisons to give you confidence in seeing if this will work.

Thanks for the offer, I usually go to the hunters mtn range when I do. The only major diff with the ria is that the barrel shank is slightly larger so after market barrels and ruger ones are slightly loose...so I've heard. I won't bother changing the barrel anyway for what it is. I've already had the trigger group stripped down and did some stoning to smooth things up and drop the pull weight slightly. I think the biggest prob with the trigger is the way the return spring is installed in the trigger guard. The hole is drilled at a slight angle in order to clear the front of the guard so that causes the plunger and spring to scrub slightly as it compresses. I've already polished the plunger itself. It is what it is I suppose lol...a 200 dollar .22
Haha. Yup. Is what it is but sounds like you're off to a good start. Usually hit the Highlands off of HM to go sledding a few times each winter.... Haven't handled an RIA 10/22 yet. May have to take a tour down your way some day and bring something different out of my collection to entice you to shoot while I ask politely to try your RIA
I used to spend alot of time back st anns in the winter sledding and ice fishing in the spring but don't seem to take the sled very far anymore. I do spend lots of time back there fishing, hunting and working tho. I don't go to the range alot, certainly not as much as I should, but usually it's just centerfire when I do go. If ya ever run into me your welcome to burn powder out of anything I have with me lol
Sounds great. I do the Cabot Trail on my bikes a few times a year too and always pack my 12 gauge pistol grip when crossing through the Highlands. One never knows when the 12 gauge equalizer may save someone from a NS coyote attack. Damn I hate 'yotes...... I know there's legalities about federal land and such but its just being transported unloaded when enroute to my destination... But I wouldn't hesitate one second to help someone in need.
