Pick 3 .22LR cartridges for me please

Can't beat CCI like everyone has said but in the cheap class, my 10/22 really likes American Eagle lead 40 grain solids accuracy wise. Been hard to find the AM 40's recently but I still have several bricks stuck away that I bought when I found out it liked them soo much.

Other than that not much to say other than ya! Stay away from the Remmy Thunderbolts!
 
My go to brands are CCI Mini-mag and Federal 525 bulk packs. Both have been very reliable for me in 6 different 22s with very good accuracy.

Sounds like a good starting place. Thanks all! I will pick up a couple small boxes of whatever is not golden bullets or thunderbolts as well. :)

Well more of a want than a need, but...

70% because I think I will get more use of it being so packable.
10% because I have no interest in bench shooting.
20% because I think it's cool. :D
 
I like anything made by cci from cb shorts to stingers. That being said, I've had good functioning and accuracy from fed auto-match. Accuracy all depends on how much your happy with, it's a relative thing. Over what distance. Rimfires are notorious for being individualistic lol, your buddies 10/22 might like one brand and yours might group better with something else. Try as many different types as you can find/afford till you decide what seems best for your gun.
 
For cheaper ammo:

Anything CCI is your best bet.
Fed. American Eagle (a couple firearms of mine like it a lot, a couple not so much)
Fed. Blue Box Std/HV
Fed. AutoMatch
Win. bulk
Rem. B'o'B, Thunderduds

In that order is how I'd rate the bulk ammo I've tried so far. Stay away from Remington and Winchester bulk ammo, the rest seemed to shoot good to really good!
 
Handguns and 10/22's can be the pickiest from what I understand, you'd want the high velocity rounds ( 1200ish fps). I run Fed automatch in a well broke in stock 10/22 with one FTE about 150 rounds and not sure if thats just the gun. Out of your criteria it's not the cleanest but seems to work well. Sold a guy 3 bricks of AE HP's as he says his handgun loves 'em, the Blazers go bang all the time to but a bit greasy and need to scrub my chamber often or i can't eject a live round in my bolt action. I have a lot of rimfire ammo on hand and my picks would be

CCI Ar Tac - very reliable and accurate in my guns, can sub in mini mags if can't find any.
Agulia red box - accurate and smells good, tad pricey
Fed Auto match - good performance for the price I paid, the fed 525's might be worth a try as well but I gave mine away after running these.
 
I like fed auto match works realy good in my savage mark 2 and smith 22a then the blue box stuff when i qant somthing better i use sk mag or sk standard plus most cci is good could never get the cci quiet or cb long to group well but they dont make much noise.
 
3? Easy.

1. CCI Mini Mag Round Nose for plinking and target practice.
2. CCI Mini Mag HP for varminting.
3. CCI Quick Shots (1640FPS SHP) for your long barreled bolt gun, so you can really reach out and zap the gophers at longer ranges.
 
I've discovered that every 22 has different preferences. I've got 4 .22s 2 pistols and 2 rifles and each one shoots better with a different brand. My Sig 226 - 22.lr prefers CCI-mini mags, Walther P22 prefers Winchester M22s, Marlin 795 loves the CCI Standard Velocity and the DAR-22 shoots best with SK Magazine. Its worth buying several brands and test shoot for groups from a rest.
 
Buy as many types as you can, test them all, then pick the top three. For me, the best hunting ammo is Federal Eagle hp, works well in many of my guns. Remington subs shoot well for me as well. Winchester 555(333)(222) shoots well for me too, winchester dynapoints shoot well too. I have 2 guns that shoot Winchester Xperts very well, they are an excellent hunting round, but very few guns shoot them better than a pattern. Minimags shoot great too, but they became a little rich and hard to find for me. Try as many brands as you can find or afford, and keep the best.
 
Are the Winchester 555/333/222 all the same ammo in different size packs, or is there actually a difference? Every time a "which is the best 22" thread comes up, I see different guys expounding the virtues of different ammo and mentioning different variations. Just curious, I though they were just different size packs.

I often wonder if rim thickness of different brands, and headspace variations make one brand seem to work better in a particular rifle over an otherwise identical model?

Same stuff, different quantities. Though I think sometimes the cartridges are labelled differently between batches. My theory is the white box stuff is mostly just garbage that didn't make the quality control to be super x.
 
I bought a new 10/22 about 3 months ago, started shooting with golden bullets, CCI 40 gr., winchester 333, fed bulk champion...they all cycled and fired fine. Around here 40gr. CCI's are pretty much as cheap as anything so I have been using them and velocities for hunting. I've only been plinking and not really bearing down to see which is more accurate, so far I can't tell. When it warms up some more maybe I'll find out but fishing starts in April...so
 
All the advice above. Have fun. Nothing finicky about a TD. Read the manual BEFORE you put it together. I bought a new blued one the other day, put it together according to instructions (proper adjustment is important), and sighted it in. I was using 555's. Only one of about 100 sounded a little off. Oh well, I will probably pass on the Olympic biathalon shooting this year anyway!
 
any HV ammo that's as cheap as you can get... for a .22 pistol or a 10/22 it won't really matter as neither are inherently extremely accurate, they just need to cycle the action.

EVERY gun has its own preference... So EVERYONE on here will post what there gun likes......

BUY lots of different ammo and try it out.... Find out what your gun "prefers" and then stock up!!!!!

I have a stock pile of ammo right now... a variety of Winchester, CCI, Remington, Federal ect..... Basically all manufacturers.. When I see it, I buy it. I have a couple rifles that will eat anything for plinking. So they chew up and spit out the garbage!

Yes. I did state that I understood this in the original post and several others have posted the same sentiment afterwards. I was only looking to narrow the field and find out what had the best chance of meeting my criteria based on the experience of others.
