168gr match and Amax in .308 caliber bullets

I have green boxes of Sierra 168s that are FMJ.

Then they changed them to HP. They were called "international" in those days, referring to the 300 meter shooting.

The 175 Sierra is the 168 bullet with a longer boattail. best of all worlds. With the 175 being available, why bother developing a load for 168?

Load the 155 or the 175.

I had to think about that for a bit. The answer I can think of is simply cost. At my suppliers 178gr are 15% more than the 168gr. And I've never come across the sierra's you speak of. But I haven't been doing this too long.

I shoot Hornady's 168 bthp and prefer them over amax. At 2750 fps out of a 26" 1-12" barrel I accurate on a 10" plate at 700yds. Next trip out I'm gonna try to hit the same target at 1000yds, then a mile.

The hornady 168 match are hard to shoot past 800m but perform flawlessly at closer range.

I just bought a batch of tipped 175 sierra matchking (tmk) to hopefully get better results in the 800-1000m distance.

I will probably keep shooting the hornady 168 under 500 and 175tmk past that. The 168 hdy are 40 cents a pop vs 65 or so for the tmk. Still a 250$ saving per 1000 for the same thing at the 200 m range.

I have had success with 168SMK out to 700m out of a 20" barrel. At 800m, things go sideways. My guess is with the short barrel, I start going subsonic. The 168 SMK does not transition well from super to subsonic.

175 SMK is good for me past 1km.

the 168 SMK specifically is known to be unstable in the transsonic zone according to litz. I would trust that guy.

I have never fired that bullet though, I buy the hornadys 168 match because they are cheaper and work really well 0-500m
I can cloverleaf those at 200 meters, not bad.
