Target ammo for 10/22????

A couple years ago I tested a few different bulk packs and found that, out of Federal/Winchester/Remington/CCI, only CCI Blazer would shoot sub 2 MOA. Winchester was nearly 5 MOA...

Decided to retest with some more last weekend and will probably add Federal Target 325 bulk pack to my buy list.

I believe every rifle will shoot slightly different since my buds had all picked different brands based on similar tests.

75yd results (10 rounds each/2" targets)

I hope you shot more than just 10 tounds of each ammo between switching brands!
My understanding is that it take 30+ rounds to season a barrel to that brand of ammo.
It would be interesting to see the results again if it was 6 targets 10 rounds in each, then switch brands and repeat.

I question the notion of "season" purely by using ammunition.

A bullet is not going to undo what a previous make and model of bullet did. If you run a bunch of Lapua LRN, it is going to leave a lot of wax lubricant on the barrel which affects every round after that.

The only way to really test would be to clean between types, and shoot enough rounds of any type that the wax from the current type of bullet has filled in any low points. It would be interesting to test in the way dusticles did, and then clean the rifle, and repeat the complete test in the opposite order of make and model.

For competitive target shooting, you wouldn't use a 10/22 unless you put a target barrel on it or you bought the 10/22 Target version.

The whole idea of competition target barrels and high quality target ammunition is to work with tighter specifications. They work together.

I have tried a bunch of different kinds of 22 ammo in my 10/22, and the most consistent, so far, have been Aguila High Velocity and RWS(the orange and black box).

Minimags work fairly well too, but not as consistent as the other two.

I would agree but I don't think OP had biathlon in mind!! ;)

For me, the 10/22 is going to replace an SR15 this summer! A group of us set up CQB type fun matches with snow fence walls and IPSC/steel targets. Going to 22's will make it more economical for everyone hit by the oil crash here in 'Berta!

It's also my #1 critter gitter! Damn squirrels keep stashing their cones in my smokehouse...

Hey Guys...
Just clearing up the mud here :)
I use higher end target grade ammo in my small bore target rifles (Elly or RWS in my Anschutz rifles)....
I've just put together a 10/22 with a heavy barrel and some "borrowed" parts off a stock 10/22.
This will be my fun 100 yard gun.....
I haven't shot the 10/22 enough to know if slower velocity target ammo will allow the action to cycle.
Right now I'm looking for a balance between accuracy, cycling, and budget (leaving a brick of target ammo at the range for fun @ a couple hundred $$$$ is not something I can justify)....
Thanks for all the feedback.
Enjoy the rain

Standard velocity or better will cycle the 10/22, and quiet/subsonic won't cycle. If you read the reviews of ammo buyers, you can find someone who swears by anything for their 10/22. I've seen American Eagle, Mini-mag, Super X, Green tag, Blazer and just about everything else, referenced by a 10/22 owner as their "go to" ammo.

A lot of people feel Remington is dirty ammo. A lot of people like Mini-mag - available as "choot'em" in boxes of 300 for a better price than the 100 cases. A section head at my range said Super X worked best in his 10/22 and I found it good as well. I've seen deformed bullets in bulk Federal target and copper plating coming off a Yellow Jacket. I don't like the idea of the barrel wear I'd have if I didn't notice it while loading, so I won't be buying those two again. BTW, if you are looking at Canadian Tire online for rimfire ammo in stock for a particular store, the CCI Choot'em is in their database as Federal brand.

One aspect that matters to me is the smell. It is one of the things that rounds out the shooting experience, and I don't like the smell of shooting Aguila.

Can anyone comment on American Eagle. I am not sure if it is my gun or feeding issues but seems to no work great. Every third shot seems to be good then the rest are bad. I am thinking about just switching to CCI Mini mags. It is the name that shows up the most.
I like the squirrel sleeping next to your gun.

Skibeedoo, if your gun is clean it should shoot AE. If it shoots other shells and not these then just move on to a different she'll. I just bought 2 cases of hp that shoot well enough for gophers to about 75yds. At 200 a case I could not pass. Try lots of brands and weights and let the gun decide.

Where you find ae's at 200 a case? My comment on AE's is that the hp's are my go to hunting ammo,
I have many 22's and have yet to have problems with it. I have a few that will sometimes make 1/2" groups at 50. I have not found the solid nose ae's to be as accurate as the hp's. Your results may vary.

I have run tests with various 22s with a selection of the various types of 22 ammo I have in the bunker. Every single gun has a clear preference for accuracy.

This is the ammo I have been using in my 10/22 rifle (actually a clone) and in my Ruger target pistol. It is standard velocity and runs both guns well.

I am selling some of it off. My son has convinced me I won't live long enough to use up all the stored 22 ammo. $10 a box, by the case of 70 boxes.

CCI Blazers have worked great in mine

I tried some winchester and it jammed and threw a lot of out of group fliers

and I can confirm that the CCI quiet-22 won't cycle a 10/22

"Accuracy" is relative to the rifle and challenge.

My son shoots small bore for training purposes. Here is one of his 50 yard targets. Group is 10 shots - about dime-sized.

This is shot with irons sights, off his elbows (no rest).

He uses a Anshutz rifle and good RWS match ammo.

Yes.

But the point is that accuracy is a function of the rifle, the ammo and the shooter.

The shooter (for each of us) is not a variable. The rifle has limits (especially things like a 10/22) and the ammo has limits. The rifle (and shooter) has to be good enough to tell good ammo from crap.
