T97 mixed reviews

Morning everyone,

So I want a bull pup (or a rifle for tac matches) but 3k is alot for a tavor once youbget the trigger done (from what I read it really needs it?) and then in the other corner you have a T97. Which needs a FTU and LHG. So your looking at 1800 at that point.

But there are SOOO many mixed reviews on each rifle. Some hate the T97 some love it. The Tavor has more positive reviews than not but its big draw back is still a 2700 base price before a trigger job.

So my question to you is: is there a better option for a NR-main battle rifle for around $1000-$1500 that doesnt weigh a ton and can compete in tac matches and can take Lar-15 mags?

This may be just terminology but a T97 is a 5.56 rifle which doesn't classify as a main battle rifle which is typically 7.62/308 or bigger. You may get a better response in the black rifle forum. This topic gets covered every few weeks...like bear defense.

That said, there are few choices for NR, STANAG, 5.56/.223 semi-auto rifles especially at that price point. Off the top of my head I can only think of a Keltec SU16 or perhaps a used Mini-14 (edit...the mini-14 is not STANAG).

T97 is TERRIBLE for tac matches... it is VERY hard to do fast mag changes, and the ergos suck.

You're much better off shooting tac matches with an AR; but if it must be NR, belly up for a Tavor or XCR. Buy once, cry once...

Tavors can be had on the EE for $22-2400.

BTW: you do NOT need a trigger for the Tavor for Tac Matches or SR. Yes, AR triggers are much nicer, but you won't even notice the Tavor trigger in CQB.

Does this apply to a T97 with FTU and LHG?

thats like putting a spoiler on a civic... lol...

ACR , Tavor are much better suited.

I cant comment on the XCR since I have never owned one. But after all the reviews about them on this forum I will never own one...

So spend more than you would for an AR, save yourself less $400 over a used Tavor (virtually the same $ if you're paying taxes on a new T97, FTU and LHG), and get the T97 rebuilt with a FTU and LHG. You'll still have terrible ergonomics for cheek weld, a poorly positioned reciprocating charging handle, and a long, tight magwell that impedes rapid mag changes...

Let me know if you take it out to more than one tac match. I've not seen one come back yet...

The T97 is designed as a line infantry rifle for Chinese conscripts. In that, it succeeds magnificently. Reasonably accurate, very lightweight, compact, simple to manufacture and use, durable, reliable, and can be stripped down to the bare bones without tools in moments.

Don't try to make it something it's not, and you'll be very happy with it.

The Tavor is designed for someone better equipped, better skilled, has a more thorough knowledge of the firearm, and it has a pricetag to match. It would do better in competitive matches obviously. It doesn't need a replacement trigger at all, just a bit of practice.

I can. Have owned Tavors, XCRs and ACRs, XCR went down the road. Ran reliably for me but the ACR is a far more superiorly refined version of a similar design to the XCR. Only things I prefer about the XCR over the ACR is availability of factory conversion kits, interchangeable grips, metal safety, mag release, and bolt release.

Depends what you really want. How fast of mag changes are you going to depend on?

While it has a LHG and FTU, the "a used Tavor is $2400" argument works for the T97 too.

Paid $1280 before the optic for that T97.

I found both the tavor and T97 to be underwhelming. But the T97 is a third the price so atleast the price matches.

Listen to Jarvey.

If you like iron sights and keep it as factory, the T97 is great.
I would in all likelihood run mine in competitions as out of the box.
I am just weird that way.

However, you want ergos and speed for matches.
This is definitely not the T97.
As you have said, too many costly mods to turn it into what it is not.

Save up your pennies and go Tavor.
