anyone know the ontario regs for maximum caliber allowed for varmint hunting?
i thought it was anything under .30 cal., but a buddy of mine says his 270 WSM isn't allowed.

thanx.

Provincial Regs said:
A person hunting small game may not carry or use a rifle of
greater calibre than a .275-calibre rifle, except a muzzle-loading
gun, in the geograhic areas of Brant, Chatham-Kent, Durham,
Elgin, Essex, Haldimand, Halton, Hamilton, Huron, Lambton,
Middlesex, Niagara, Norfolk, Northumberland, Oxford, Peel,
Perth, Toronto, Waterloo, Wellington or York

Different municipalities might have other rules.

Slightly OT, but a buddy of mine hunted gophers with his .50cal. We even think he hit a few, hard to tell.

One of the dumbest regs we've got going for us. 7.62X39 would be a fine coyote round, but it's "bad". Instead I can blast it with a .270WSSM, and at over twice the muzzle energy, that's A-OK!

Part of me would like to see that rule overhauled.

But the realist in me knows that the new regs they'd come up with would be even more restrictive. Balls.

Is Ontario the only province with this sort of caliber restriction? I plink with lots of big calibers so I don't see any reason not to varmint hunt with them.

Unfortunately not. Here in Newfoundland we are limited to .225 and below among centerfire cartridges for coyotes.

Only certain areas of the province, I am in south eastern Ontario and there are no broad paint brush style laws like that that I am aware of, possibly some local municipal bylaws. Correct me if I am wrong please.
