I'm currently loading some 240gr plated bullets in 44 magnum and now I would like to try out the 200gr bullets. I'm located in the Toronto area. Thanks!
Good luck as I've never seen a 200gr plated of any brand. The only options for 200gr .44 bullets that I have found are Nosler JHC and Hornady XTPs. I think I've bought every Nosler in Canada (sorry) and the XTPs are a PITA but available. If you can live with 210gr bullets, X-Reload has(had) some Sierra's in stock last Saturday.
What's wrong with the Hornady xtp bullets? I've never used them before. Thanks!
I think they sell the rejects from their factory ammo line for reloading because they have a very inconsistent seating depth. Once I set the the seating die for the Campros I could crank out a million of them without having to make any adjustment. With the Hornadys it's check every. single. f---ing. round.
Do you trim your cases to all the same length? Have you actually measured the bullets by themselves to check for inconsistencies? I load very small amounts so I don't mind checking for seating depth everytime. Thanks!
Yes not that it matters with the straight wall cases and no, not the bullets themselves. Just the COAL and it can vary by +/- .030" And even checking every one of 50 pieces gets real stale real fast.
I seriously doubt Hornady would ever ship rejects. On a bottle neck case I'd be looking for a crumpled shoulder, and that issue is still possible with a straight wall, but might be less obvious. Try backing out your seating die to be sure it's not crimping, readjust the seating depth and see if the problem goes away. Some loads on a 44 mag are more consistent with a crimp, yours may just be a tad too tight for some of your cases. The other possibility, that the bullet is not compatible with your seating die's stem, should be visible, if you closely examine the bullet to see if the tip is damaged, and shortened.I think they sell the rejects from their factory ammo line for reloading because they have a very inconsistent seating depth. I use the 200gn .44 XTP's - haven't had any issues.
Just received a couple hundred of the .44 200gr xtp bullets. I'm thinking maybe 28gr of h110.... Any of you guys have favourite loads with this powder and bullet?
I really like the 28gr load of H110 behind the 200XTP's - fair accuracy and lots of entertaining boom/flame through my Redhawk LOL! Pic from some testing I did a short while back:
