Ruger American....wow, what a piece of crap!

I had two one in 243 and the other in 270. I kept the 270 and sold the 243, but they were not as bad as the one Hitzy got. I like a number of Rugers designs, but their materials and tooling is left to be desired. They're functional and do the job intended, but the race to the bottom is turning out rough around the edges firearms.

I kid you not folks, put a Ruger 1911, and a recent Norinco 1911, side by side, and the Norinco will come out the winner every time.

The magazines are so expensive for what they are, Ruger should be downright tarred and feathered.
Interesting comments.

I bought a 223 compact for my kids after giving up trying to find a cz527 carbine or a 223 kimber Montana

I liked it well enough to buy a 308 for myself and then a 243 appeared here for $250 so I bought that one too.

All three are accurate and reliable with good triggers. I didn't have much use for the 243 that had been chopped down so I dug a takeoff hawkeye 308 barrel I had and it practically dropped in so now I have two 308's and like them both for truck guns.

My only gripe is that the magazines are $39 usd instead of $5.99 like they should be, but they work.

Thanks for the pics, that is bad ... mine is nowhere near this on the bolt, I think it's typical for the barrel and there are tooling marks on the bolt face. 783 is much better made.

To the OP.

1. Stop buying low end ####. Lesson learned. Move on.

2. Ruger's QC sucks. It really does. Some stuff is good. Other times it's downright embarrassing.

3. Generally they will make it right. If not, hopefully the retailer you bought it from will.

how does it shoot?
Probably better then it looks!
Opened the package today, going to consignment tomorrow.... I won't be shooting this thing, and I'll be glad when I don't own it anymore.
I have no problem eating $150-$200 on this as a lesson learned. Nobody should settle for this low quality work from an American gun maker. Only time I've seen barrels finished that bad was from Norinco and old Ruger Mini 14's.

I own a two Ruger Hawkeyes, one in .308 and one in .375 Ruger. Both are quality firearms with good fit/finish/accuracy. That being said I have shot and handled a Ruger American purchased by a friend of mine that had it not been stamped Ruger, I would never have believed it was built by the same company. But it was a bargain/budget rifle and you get what you pay for.

Wow.... this is not impressive.

I refuse now to go any "cheaper" than a Vanguard. Recently handled a T3. Seemed like a good rifle. The overall look of it did't knock me out and it felt REALLY plastic but can't see going any lower than a T3 or Vanguard any longer.

Race to the bottom indeed.

I'm really happy with my 416 Ruger Alaskan. Bolt is pretty slick, and really decent trigger. Obviously a fairly big difference between the bottom models and the higher end.

Here's a sea-kritt I lernt a while back..........some dealers sell their quality chit chit
at gun shows to unsuspecting customers.
Nawt awn here and nawt in their shop.

You've been had.
I'd send that back to Ruger tewt sweet.

The Howa/Vanguard is in a different league than the American/Axis/783.

I really like Ruger firearms but their lineup seems to be increasing el-cheapo plastic and black tacticool. Luckily they still make No1's (hugely diminished production), some of the Hawkeye's that are nice and their fantastic magnum revolvers.

why not send it back to Ruger through Stoeger? You really got an anomaly there imo. I have one in .243 and have absolutely no complaints about it.

Local shop got a ruger rpr in 308 the bolt had very bad tool marks as well. Also sounded very zipper like same as the op's American. For 1500+ was not overly impressed.
