Ruger American....wow, what a piece of crap!

Probably better then it looks!
Opened the package today, going to consignment tomorrow.... I won't be shooting this thing, and I'll be glad when I don't own it anymore.
I have no problem eating $150-$200 on this as a lesson learned. Nobody should settle for this low quality work from an American gun maker. Only time I've seen barrels finished that bad was from Norinco and old Ruger Mini 14's.

Here's a problem, if no one takes time to complain about the $### they shovel out the door, what reason to they have to improve?

I would send pics to Ruger and complain. At the very least we will see how they deal with it. Hopefully they don't direct you to Snapshots for warranty service as that's like pulling teeth.

I've owned Stevens, Axis and Howa and shot 710, 783, Anerican. The Howa is probably the Best Buy as it's still devebt quality. The rest are what they are- inexpensive and rough. I would never own one as a primary hunting rifle, although I could see a new hunter on a budget using one. To me, they are mostly truck or barn guns.

why not send it back to Ruger through Stoeger? You really got an anomaly there imo. I have one in .243 and have absolutely no complaints about it.

I really don't want another one of these....even if the finish was decent, it still feels very "Axis cheap" to me, probably due to the stock mostly. The hole I was trying to fill was a lightweight .308...don't really need one, I have a couple heavy .308 to burn ammo through, about a half dozen 30'06 hunting rifles. I'll look for a REM 7 or a M70-LW in .308. I like the Howa and Vanguard rifles, but they are pretty big heavy actions and I find them better suited for long action and magnum rounds.
Just a learning experience.... There were none locally to handle, ordered online from a sponsor but not their fault at all.
Maybe I'll see if I can ship it back to them...they have a 30 day policy.

I guess I've been lucky....the 2xHowa/2xVanguard/2x783/ and even the one Axis I have were made considerably better then this pile of ####.

I have loaded for 710's and own Vanguards , so I am not claiming to be elitist.

They all shoot , some very well.

But yeah , the feel and ergonomics , well , all I can say is they are to be expected.

Too bad it was a prime example of low end.

If it shoots , it would make a good back up you can beat the crap out of.

I just been down the road I even if it hurts a bit more , I go to the other end of budget.

I thought your first post was a bit of a rant, but after seeing the pics... WOW that is terrible.

I say send it back out of principle, let ruger melt it back down and try again...

I looked at one a few months back at my local gun shop. I noticed right away a lot of the imperfections that Hitzy describes so I handed right back to shop owner and just said no you can keep that junk. He laughed a little and said how come everyone that looks at it says the same thing.

Never owned a Ruger....was impressed with the accuracy of their little .22 auto pistol years ago. Cheap but very functional. Other than that never thought much of their 'enthusiastic' use of casting parts..probably ok but indicative of a company pursuing cheap vs right..... I have admired the No.1's but after a friend bought one a decade or so ago (and we both agreed it was very nice) he quietly got rid of it less than 6 months later..unusual for him.

Hitzy- I trust your judgement, and you always seem to give a Fair review on guns you've owned. I too was looking at this same rifle a while back,.....I'm soooo glad you posted this.!! Saved me bucks. I owe you a beer or Timmys, LOL.

Any axis I've seen is plenty accurate. Not the prettiest, but accuracy is not a problem with them. Now that stock.....

If it weren't for CNC machines we probably wouldn't be defending the the accuracy of an Axis. I guess this is progress ... sort of ..

Ruger has joined the great American race to the bottom. Low cost garbage quality. I will only buy European guns any more. They are more expensive, but they generally build good quality. It's a difference in culture.
Been buying European for a while now and never been disappointed. The only North American rifle in my safe is a Marlin 782 from the 70's.

People bash the plastic on Tikka T3s but I keep buying them because they really are much nicer than most of the other sub-1000$ rifle out there. I will say that Browning seems to make some nice stuff but I've only owned a BAR.

I handled a Ruger America at Cabelas a while back to see what all the rage was about and I was literally surprised at how cheap it felt. Lots of good ideas and features built into the rifle but you can tell they are there just as selling features.

the T3 is a much better rifle all around. it is lighter than some others but the quality is there. OP after you get your refund, you may want to give T3 a try

One of the great over looked "budget rifles" is the Browning AB3 - it has come on the market quietly. Fit and finish is excellent for the price point and I have just got in the (2016) walnut stocked models which are about the same price as the scoped American's this year.

When you pick up one of the synthetic models it really does feel and sound (when you tap it) like a real gunstock instead of a few recycled coke bottles. Worth a look. If you can hold one and compare it to the American, Axis or Patriot in a side by side comparison 99% would choose the AB3 (which is still close to 200 bucks cheaper than a Vanguard II or basic T3, both of which are barely under 1K this year).
