1961-1966 Cooey 84 12 gauge 30inch 3-inch chamber?

Kylevan---just a thought. Does the number on the barrel match the receiver? Also to clarify, does it say Winchester on the receiver?

Yes both stamped with 34914. Yes it does, right side says "Made by Winchester western Canada limited"

Humm none of my 84's are stamped like that only 840's but mine are real early also and is that not a real low serial number for a last produced 84's or was it 68 it became a requirement. I cannot remember.
Can you post a pic maybe
Cheers

Couple of more questions I just thought of to try and narrow down production date. Does it have a plastic or steel forearm spacer and is the receiver stamped steel or cast?

Steel forearm spacer. I would think stamped steel by looks but to be honest not exactly sure how to tell the difference. I know what a cast engine block looks like but can't imagine a receiver would look like that. Any tips on identifying?

Kind of hard to explain. Does your receiver have a lot of bluish case coloring on it or is it black? Also, is the trigger guard a one piece steel unit that was originally blued or is it a black pot metal guard with a line down the center? Also, is the hammer steel or a black pot metal one?

The receiver, trigger gaurd, and hammer all have blueish case colouring.

From your description is does appear to be a model 84 from the early years of the Winchester take over or at least pre 67. There is maybe the possibility that someone had the chamber lengthened when 3" was becoming more popular . I checked my Mercury branded model 84. It has a serial number of 31682 and as I mentioned, it is 2 3/4".
However, as has already been mentioned, it is very confusing when it comes to various years/models of Cooeys so who knows for sure. I have a model 37A in .410. The 37A was long after the Winchester take over in 61. I believe they were only stamped Winchester by that time. Well this gun is only stamped "Cooey" with no reference to Winchester on it anywhere. Figure that one out.

Sounds like someone did it just to mess with you! That is definitely a strange one! So given that you now know basically everything about the gun do you have an idea of value. I get that it's hard to say because you can't tell for sure the condition ( which is very good). Just looking for ballpark to know how I did purchasing it. Thanks again

To be honest with you, most of your typical 12 gauge go anywhere from $100.00 to $140.00. Some that are in very nice (like new) original condition may bring a bit more with unfired, new in box examples bringing the most. Guns with the 32" or 36" barrel may also bring more. I have an unfired NIB 840 that I would not sell for less than $200.00. The biggest thing is, if you are happy with the gun that is all that matters.

Your dropping a fired shell in it proves nothing it probaly has the folds into the tapered forcing cone which makes the exit diameter too small. This can make the chamber pressure rise to dangerous levels. The right tool I would believe and I would make triple sure being an 84 since they didnot come 3" based on anything I have ever read or seen and have seen a lot of these but again maybe someone had it reworked who knows
Cheers

Obviously I have not seen the gun, but it's possible an owner had it reamed to a 3" chamber.

I've got a Cooey/Winchester with a 30" barrel that says it is chambered in 2 1/2" and 3"; looks like this:
