why do you shoot IPSC or IDPA

I agree with opcx6 - i started ipsc in 87 and now shoot idpa - its alot like ipsc was in the old days.
I like IDPA better because it rewards pure shooting skill more (in my opinion- i am sure others will disagree) where IPSC has a lot of gaming and equipment wars.
I am also not 25 anymore and cant run with the young guns.
That said i still shoot a bit of IPSC for fun.
they are different sports but both are fast and fun - both will bring lots of enjoyment - try both and pick the one you like best or better yet shoot both

my $0.02

I used to think that IPSC was a young person's game, until I saw Rob Leatham at a US Nationals continuing to be competitive with people half his age. Sure, age does slow us down some, but first and foremost, IPSC is still a shooting game, and accuracy is far more important than speed.

When I learned the importance of accuracy over speed, my scores jumped considerably, to the tune of going from A to GM within a short time. If you can't shoot well, you will never win, no matter how fast you can go. I shot some defensive pistol matches (not IDPA, but bastardized versions) and had a lot of fun, but there are no IDPA or similar matches that are well advertised and near enough that I don't have to get up too early in the morning, or stay up too late at night. :D

I think the biggest difference is that IPSC shooters know they're playing a game.
Not according to some that I have met.

Chilliwack runs monthly matches (next one April 3rd). Low keyed, no drama and a lot of fun for only $20.00
8:30 AM to about 2:30-4:00 PM depending how many people show up.

Recently I bought a yellow belt, shoes, mag pouches and wore a batman shirt during a match. For me it's slowing morphing from a game to something very strange. :D

I do both. Plan on doing both. This learning to walk again kinda really hurts my Chances in IPSC. Unless I can get most targets from farther back ranges.

I don't know of a single IPSC competitor who thinks of it as anything other than a game.
More of a attitude thing by a handful of competitors that really should know better. Like when some people blow a stage and then look to find fault with the stage and/or the officiating after the fact. As if #####ing/whining about it is going to change anything. As if it was something more than a game. Kinda takes the fun out of being there.

If I won the $50 Mil lotto max, I'd shoot both, and shotgun matches, and 3 gun matches, and rifle matches, and sniper matches, and sporting clays, trap, 5 stand, cowboy action.....etc...and All over the World !! :dancingbanana::runaway:

I'd love to try ipsc but I'm sure they could time my fat a$$ with a calendar instead of a stop watch.

Go try it out anyway. I know I am not in it to win it ( so are many others), but I like shooting challenging stages to make me more proficient with my production ( unaltered, off the shelf) handgun. Its great fun :)

One you dress like a clown using technology to help your score. The other you dress like a fisherman but your equipment doesn't give you a leg up and ppl are more relaxed...

oh no...

Those who can, shoot IPSC those who can't just b$%ch and moan about why IDPA is better. I really like the racket ball/squash example. If you like learning to shoot quick and accurate with your own plan one of these is for you. If you like to play tactical hide and seek while eating pie (kidding) (mostly) than pick the other. Two different shooting sports with different flavors, try each one before you decide or even better shoot them both.

They can be fun if you can find a place that keeps it fun. Some groups can be like high school with geeks, jocks and bullies .

IDPA does sound interesting to me and I would give it a try if I was near any matches, but pretty hard to justify ferry and hotel for a match in Chilliwack every month. As long as people are actively engaged in any shooting sport I say go for it and have fun.
