I don't know much about much but Ive never heard about this "graining". Does he mean rough sanding marks??

Sorry but I think that gun was beautiful at the beginning. Now not so much. If I want a new gun I'll go buy a Remington 700.

It might be a 600$ gun to an informed collector, but unfortunately there's a ton of rich aholes who just want to be able say "my mauser looks better than yours" with no regard to the history of the rifle. Its sad to see the history being wiped from so many military artifacts and I think its a trend that's actually getting stronger.

The thought of someone "thinking" that one of the best metal finished military rifles in the 20th century needed roughing up to conform to their "perception" of wartime production is beyond the realm of belief. Human race is in big trouble.

I tell people at gun shows - "Make a $600 military rifle into a $200 sporter" - or some variation. Sidegrinder, 30 grit sandpaper, some spar varnish, maybe a hacksaw cut or two, and - PRESTO! - you have an abortion that no person anywhere near sane would even look at without a welder's helmet on. But it's your rifle, so have at it.

Whoever sent this gun to them could have saved a bunch of money by just picking up a Mitchell's Mauser.

The gun looked good before the 'restoration' started. These restoration places will happily charge top dollar to 'improve' your guns so they are worth less than when your started.

I hate to be blunt but most of the restorations I've seen coming from places like this aren't even very good. They just don't capture the period finishes or phosphates and for the prices they charge I wonder if it's ever even worth it? It's not uncommon to see this sort of work re-surface as 'original' when the sellers get desperate to unload them, but luckily in most cases it's pretty obvious what's been done. But still people keep spending money to ruin their guns....
