I see Tradeex has some post war Russian TT33 pistols 7.62x25 for $179 in goood condition....I've never had a handgun, any thoughts ?

Best bargain out there for the pistol, but be careful with the surplus ammo- it's usually corrosive, so you'd need to clean it asap after the range.
However, there is commercial ammo available (very snappy stuff), and you can reload for it.

I don't have a hand gun but have been able to shoot a few of other peoples guns. The TT33 impressed me the most of the hand guns I have tried.
.22 is too small and wimpy to be a lot of fun, but it would probably make the best training or first gun.

I love my tt33...I just don't expect to hit anything with it. You won't ever find a better price to bang ratio (mine shoots flames most of the time) but if your shooting pleasure comes from printing tiny groups, the tt33 will be a very frustrating experience.

BTW, was my first handgun too mostly cuz the price was right and the ammo is cheap. I say go for it...your next pistol can be a CZ or Sig...

What impressed me the most about the TT33 I was allowed to try, was that I could actually hit the target, unlike all the other guns I tried.
Although the .22 I tried may simply have made holes that were too small for me to see.

One of the biggest complaints seems to be the grips, are there after market grips for it and can you fit a holosun red dot to it?

I was thinking the same thing, I like my TT33 a lot, but I also hate the grips. There is a beautiful pic of one going around the internet that has some kind of rubber molded grip (not just replacing the side panels). I would buy that for sure, But despite looking I cant find it.

TT33 accuracy is more than acceptable for a mass produced combat pistol.
Even with surplus ammo I can shoot all 8 rounds in a magazine into a pie plate group at around 15 meters with little effort on my behalf.
It gets a bad rep because people compare them to a custom tuned modern 1911 etc
It was my first civilian hand gun and I still own one. They are awesome guns. One of the best bang for buck deals in canada right now price being what it is for what you get.
They are slim and sleek too which I like. I can reach all the controls without even breaking my grip.
Go for it Sir, you will not be disappointed! Just get a post war Russian. Better fit and finish and the slide serrations are better making it easier to pull it back I found.

Always had one of these kicking around since taking up handguns, reasonable price for both gun and ammo, they sure are fun, especially at dusk, great fireballs!

I shot one at 15m using a benchrest front rest the other day, just for kicks. I was managing 3" groups with about 1 shot in 5 being a 'flier' about 4-5" from the centre of the group.
Shot one 3 shot group that had all 3 holes touching.

This thing can shoot better than I can make it shoot, which is great for an under $200 gun shooting ammo that's under $0.20 a shot and a real calibre

IMHO an M&P 22 can't be beat for a lot of fun. The more mags you have the more fun it gets.

A seventy year old TT33 is probably not the perfect first pistol to learn with but it will always be a great show piece. At $179 you can't go wrong.

Thats really good, a lot better than I can do with mine. They are fun to shoot no matter what.

Actually, I am comparing it to my stock Norinco 1911...I wouldn't even consider comparing it to my Sig or my M&P. And an 8-10" group at 15m was sorta my point...it's like the SKS of handguns. Still functional and a blast to shoot, but my advice was more tuned to a rifle guy who's getting his first handgun. If you are used to MOA groupings with your rifle, a handgun is humbling...a TT33 more so.

I actually used my TT at an outlaw CQB match last year and it worked fine - I didn't score a lot of pistol hits, but I startled the crap out of the guy shooting next to me every time I popped off a shot...I love it, but I have reasonable expectations for it.
