Polish M44 looks like NOS unrefirb - Clean off the cosmo or ??

I was cleaning out my gunsafes and tucked away in the back of one I hadn't opened in a loooong time I found a polish M44 that I bought about 30 years ago (give or take) that is still full of cosmoline. I looked it over and I couldn't find any signs of it having ever been fired and everything is matching. I'm not any sort of expert at all so I might be wrong. I'm thinking of taking it in and having a gunsmith I know look it over and tell me what he thinks.

What I'm wondering is, should I take the time to clean off/out all the cosmo or should I leave it all covered in the stuff?

Also, does anyone know what I should look at in particular to try to figure out if it was ever refurbished or fired?

I may end up keeping it and I may end up selling it but first I want to figure out more about it. I'm not looking for any offers or estimations of what it would be worth, I just want to know more about how to figure out
more about it.
 
If it is a 1951 model then it would be the most collectable year. I have one from that year that still has grease in barrel. Any other year is more common.
 
Leave the cosmo on, please. Many of us milsurp collectors like being the one to remove the cosmo (if we remove it at all)
You should be very proud of your younger self - he did a very smart thing. You probably paid $75 and now it may be worth $500

My younger self just wasted money on dumb stuff.:(
 
With a Polish M44 if the numbers are all matching and are stamped in the same font it's non-refurbished and original matching.

Definitely keep it in the grease.

Whenever I buy something and like shooting it, I try to buy another one, new or mint if possible and just put it away in case the one I like shooting breaks

it was very sad when they messed with things and a bunch of my favorite shooters became unshootable (prohibs that aren't handguns)
