Wondering if anyone could suggest a competent gunsmith to mount a new barrel in my rem 700 vtr? Thinking of scrapping the triangle and going to a 26 inch heavy barrel. May as well get the lugs lapped as well while I'm at it. I find the short triangle barrel creates to much reqoil and really sucks when the rifle leaps with the bipod when on the bench or laying prone, any suggestions for rate of twist? I want a barrel that'll preform well out to 1000 yards.

If I were staying in Nova Scotia I'd take it to Sam Adams best smith in the east , he overhauled my ruger mk1 varmint rifle and closed the grouping up from 3 inches to all touching :D I'll look into all these guys you named here though.

Calgary. I'll be relocated to Calgary by the first week of October. I'd prefer to have a guy work on my gun who has the reputation for medal winning rifles. Sure it'll be used for stump shooting a lot and I want to put it through field situations however I want a tack driver, right now I'm getting 1/2 moa out of it depending on what ammo I use but the stumpy barrel and that stupid muzzle break make it a handful to hold onto, it has an uncontrollable hop to it when it goes off, unlike my ruger heavy barrel that just sits there.

There are a lot of options out here! In southern Alberta you have Dan Opel, Bob Galloway, Henry Rempel and ATRS. Then a little further north you get new comers like Insite Arms, EM Precision and Downrange Precision (but i think Julien is on hiatus). I have seen products from all of them and every one of them produce top notch rifles. You've got some shopping to do!! Haha

I'm sure there are others but I would vouch for this group personally.

Personally, I support those in the industry that are equally supportive of all shooting sports. I recommend you do your homework.

I wouldn't support a smith who has actively lobbied against other shooting sports for the sole benefit of a particular discipline (such as Fullbore)...but it's your money, support who you wish. Ymmv.

1/2 MOA is really good for a factory rifle with factory ammo. If you want better than that, your likely only going to get it with hand loads.

The compensator built into that barrel is designed to eliminate barrel rise. I'd say that your likely getting bipod hop from stock position on your shoulder.

Before I dive into a new barrel perhaps experiment with handloads and possibly a new stock, I noticed the other day that hogue rubberized stocks have way too much whip in the forestock, it appears to flex on the bipod. I took the bipod off and used my shooting bag as a rest and got a lot better results, however I prefer shooting from the bipod, any affordable suggestions for aftermarket stocks with piller bedding?

If affordability is one of the main objectives, I would take a hard look at the Magpul stocks. The KRG X-ray is also an affordable chassis. Both solid options. If you can afford a bit more on a chassis or stock, then your options will increase vastly.

As far as re-barreling, Insite Arms would be the first people I would go to in Canada.
