Early in the morning while it's still dark and your decoys are set, you are comfortable, waiting for the sun to rise and the action to start. Do you let out a cluck or two in the hopes of letting a horny Tom know a hen is close by...........or do you wait till the birds come off their roosts and then start calling.

I just wish there were turkeys in this area to hunt! I have only ever been lucky enough to eat wild turkey on two occasions. The very best tasting fowl dinners ever!

^ I've seen some around Marchand on the edge of Sandilands quite some number of yrs ago, but at the time I wasn't hunting them nor did I have a Lic and shot gun. I've been there since on a number of occasions hunting deer, and did not see any turkeys. I guess it was "the right place at the right time" type of thing. The Taurus needs a frt whl brg! Got one, but too miserable weather to install it, shop is full:(

I am the same as Brad... as soon as it is light enough to shoot, I start calling. If the birds are calling aggressively during pre-dawn, I may start early with soft tree yelps, just to let them know I am there... when they hit the ground, you want them heading your way as soon as they start moving... but don't over call in the dark.

We usually hear them gobble when they come out of the trees - as soon a they get noisy we get noisy.

Thy start gobbling long before thy fly down...most guys start calling way to soon.toms will start to gobble at the break of dawn and keep going for a hour before thy fly down .some times thy fly from tree to tree to get to the edge before flying down. I like to wait till I know thy are moving around before I start to call.and I will start with a fly down cackle.

Depends in the birds I'm hunting. If there are hens with the toms I'll let them dictate my calling. Lot of mornings I'm calling to the hens more than the Tom. Every situation is different.

Brad, that homemade bacon sounds damn tasty!

Two dogs, wild turkey is probably my favorite game to hunt and eat. Real fun birds!

I am definitely counting the minute's and definitely stressing that i have not found a flock yet on an area i may hunt, hopefully i see some in a field and beg the land owner for permission lol

Hehe, me too. Even installed a countdown timer on my phone....13 days, 6 hours, and 27 minutes :d

To answer the OP, I like to get in place early and I wait a half hour or more then let out a few clucks just to let them know. Seems most of us are doing the same thing based on the responses.

Fire up the Taurus and head east..... That one is maple bacon glazed with syrup I make from scratch and bacon I smoked myself.....

We will need the recipe....
