$779 too much for a German K98 at Canadian Tire?

That SKS appears to be one of those walnut stocked ones being that I see no bottom mounted sling attachment. So, priced higher as a result.

Russian captures used to be $500 last year at CT. They were all heavily worn with the usual red Russian shellac slathered all over them.
The one in the photo looks not as red in colour. If it is a non Russian capture, then $800 is a decent price

Oh yes, I see you are right about that SKS. Still too much though I think. Its funny we've heard of a few of those at CT now. As for the K98, I'd certainly like to look at it. The finish also makes me think there could be more to the story, but probably just a refinished RC.

The one on the right looks like a Yugo M48. Most of them are brand new unissued. Based on the K98 but not exactly the same. I'm not sure what the advantage of being able to inspect in person is worth. My local CT has 5 and 2 of them have excellent bores, 1 is good and the remaining 2 are poor. All look similar on the outside and have various degrees of peening and parts matching. I'm a shooter first so bore condition is #1 for me.

I bought the Yugo M48 on the right... bore is shiny with strong rifling, almost new condition (used a flashlight in the store and saw strong rifling but a layer of cosmo, cleaned the bore when I got home and it's like a shiny new quarter). It was listed as an M98/48 but it only says M48 on the action with the Yugo crest. It doesn't look like the M98/48's that Trade Ex has for sale, so maybe it's an M48.

The K98's looked shallacked to me, but again, I don't know what original finish they had. The one on the left that didn't get into the picture was the nicer one.

So I'm looking for markings like these?

what you would look for ultimatly would be an all matching rifle, but in this case its most likley a russian capture rifle so a good bore first of and good wood and without peened out waffents are cartouche on the stock. That is what i wiuld look for

And the set screws in tact and in place (or whatever they're called)

You're looking for the markings in your top photo. The bottom one is the Portuguese Coat-of-Arms found on contract pieces. Not sure how many of those would have made it to become RC.

Read the k98 sticky and it will tell you all you need to know!!

EL34/6L6 is referring to the capture screws. The Russians usually discarded them during the refurb process.

st1264: The second pic in the post just above is of a 1941 Portugese contract rifle. If that is in the cabinet at CTC, I would have that in my truck so quick that the barrel would get hot just from the wind passing by.

Definitely , couldn't agree more , a 41 port contract for $700-$800 at a CTC is a find and a buy for sure.

That was posted from k98 sticky... Didn't see k98's up close yet. Like I said, I don't know FA about these.

Here they are. Both had stocks that had wear on them. Both had shiny bores, not 'like new' like the M84 I bought, but were in good shape. My eyes aren't that great at reading small markings anymore so I got my smartphone out. What do you guys think?

Asked young dude if he knew anything about these? "No". Can I take pics so I can send a buddy them, he knows a lot about these. "Sure". How many do you have of these. "5 total, these 2 and 3 more in the back".

Russian capture for sure. X on receiver and a few other things indicate it. BYF 42 ain't a bad code at all , not rare but a 42 made BYF would have been of good quality. I wouldn't pay $779 for it myself though.

Nothing special (mismatched capture rifle) and too much money... sounds about right. Maybe I'll check the other 3 in the back if I go there again.

The new price is a reflection of supply. This is because North Sylva has increased their price CT is adding approximate 20% profit - which isn't a lot of profit for a "dealer". On new firearms - depending on the brand etc. 'dealer' mark-up is generally 10-20% with sometimes a mark up as high as 40% with supplier/rep discounts.

The dropping loonie really hit the price of any imported firearms - Approx 20% increases in 2016. And just because the dollar has been on the rebound - don't expect discounts anytime soon.

I think the price is on the higher end - but long term a buyer would still do well, especially if a unique rifle/code. However, if one wants a run of the mill RC - got to the EE versus CT.
