I just bought a Ruger RPR in .308. I have never owned a scoped rifle before so I do not know anything about them. The closest I have to a scope is Aimpoint T2 LOL.

I want to shoot out to 500M.

I am looking for a good scope, with good eye relief and enough magnification to allow me to shoot out to 500M.

Budget is under $1500 taxes in.

What brands are good?

What option should I look out for?

I need to be schooled on mounts and reticles and basically everything. What is the best way for a newb to learn about scopes and mid range shooting?

I am trying to learn as much as I can, so I do not buy the wrong scope for my needs and have to sell it at a loss.
 
I have six Zeiss HD-5 scopes, and for this application, that is what I would choose. The optics are clear and bright, they track true, and the lockplex turrets can be adjusted without removing any turret caps, yet they would be difficult to move accidentally. They are also on sale at Wholesale Sports.
 
You won't find better than Nightforce SHV line in that price range. I have never had or heard of a bad NF,their glass is also excellent. 3-10X42 Moar would be my pick, depending on your intended use of course. They retail for about 1200$ The 4-14X56 would also be great should you decide to go beyond 500, over time you probably will. ATRS is the importer for these scopes, talk to them about the details, they are very knowledgable and will help you with the other questions you have.

another vote for sightron siii, you might even be able to afford the newer first focal plane versions, with the better reticle (imo). Or if the FFP version is too much the SFP versions are within your budget. Then just decide on moa/moa or mil/mil version.

I found the reticle too thick for precision work. Would be fine for hunting but not a range toy.
