Does anyone know if these will sort LIVE ammo?

Thanks for the replies.

yes it will. Question is why do you have large amounts of mixed ammo to sort? :)

I stumbled into quite a few crates of ammo not too long ago. But when i got it home realized that 90% of it was mixed rimfire, pistol and rifle ammo. So im looking for a way to sort it all. I could pick it out by hand but with the amount i have it would take me weeks.

Now that's a great problem to have. Post some pics :)

Small handfuls and gentle agitation please. And don't let them fall very far.

I say this because when I posted that I'd dropped a round and it hit a little pebble or something on the pavement it went off another fellow replied that he had a casing from his pistol fall on a round in the open ammo case on the bench and strike a primer and set it off. Oddly enough I've been a bit more careful since all that about stirring ammo around or when pouring live ammo from one container into another.

If I were in your lucky boots I'd likely use these same separators. But I'd set up an old bath towel or something and hold the sorter no higher than about 5 to 6 inches off the towel. And I'd go easy when dumping the rounds left in the sorter into the next size up sorter.

All in all with a touch of care and common sense you'll do just fine. And along with the rest I'm officially envious as well... :d

Good point BCRider. Especially with the rimfire ammo. Centerfire ammo takes a pretty specific hit to the primer - very low probability but it can happen. For rimfire ammo, the primer material is under the entire circumference of the rim, so you are making contact with that all the time. Still takes a decent hit to crush the rim enough to set off the primer though so you should be fine :)

Thanks for the tip. Care and common sense will be used.

I'd just pick what I needed on demand, unless you have a good reason to have this batch of ammo sorted.

Call me OCD. I like to keep things organized. Plus each crate has a crap load of mixed calibers in it. So far from what i can see it ranges from 17hmr to 45/70 and everything in between. Im guessing theres around 30-40ish calibers total. It would be a PITA to sort only when i needed.

Holy cow, that is really mixed. I hear ya on the OCD, but sorting these crates does not fall into ODC at all :)

How did the ammo come to be mixed like that?

I too would like more info of how these wonderful crates came to be!! From what I was able to oogle there is a smattering of calibers 22 to 50's . That's one fantastical find! Trying not to go in to a fit of Jealousy I am. Thanks for sharing !:xes

That's such a mess of a mix that I'm not sure the sorters will do a decent job. If you have them or have wanted to buy a set for some time then fine. But I'm thinking that hand sorting will be needed even with the sorters. That's an Ammo Salad of epic proportions! ! ! !

I was at my dad's last weekend and he presented me with a similar "pail" of mixed ammo (not nine pails mind you, just one).

Dad: "Here, sort through this and take what you want".
Me: Gulp..."No thanks. Where did you get that from?"
Dad: "Oh, just collected it over the years. You know, loose rounds here and there. Some given to me, some oh, I don't know (frustrated that I asked), do you want it or not?"

Now that you have proposed using those sorters, I may just check in with him again.

Looks like you hit the mother-lode!!! Well done!

That's quite a problem to run into, quite jealous. I think you'll have to at least split them into rifle/rimfire/pistol then run them through the sorter a handful at a time.
I wish I had your problem tho, I'd spend a weekend sorting it all apart haha

Actually my guess would be that you could throw 22 rimfire cartridges from the top of a skyscraper onto a concrete sidewalk and none of it would go bang... not enough mass

OP, I sugest finding a young new shooter at the range and offering them the .22lr if they sort the crate.
I bet it would not be hard to strike some kind of deal with a keen kid.

That seems like an odd way to sort ammo, but each to their own I guess lol. In the OP's situation though, it's the mass of the other rounds I'd be considering.

I'd say this has all the makings of a good Mythbusters episode. I remember they did one episode trying to set off a bullet by hitting it with a hammer. It was a center fire round so of course none of them got it to work. If they had tried that on a rimfire round, they would have gotten a lot better results. I'm going to miss that show :( and Kari :( :(
