S&W MP22 issue- I have a picky eater.

I have an M&P 22 and had no issue with it until the current thing started with .22LR hoarding and took Federal Champion hollow points off the Canadian market. They were always my favourite in auto pistols and my little M&P functioned flawlessly with them- still does when I feel like treating myself by shooting some of my dwindling supply. With every other available ammo I've tried however, the gun becomes very cranky with failures of all kinds happening- failures to feed, failures to eject, even the occasional failure to fire (which last thing I realise is probably 100% the ammo maker's fault, not the gun's). Speaking of the gun, no change of cleaning regime or lube product makes the least difference, it just hates everything I've tried but Federal Champion. It's great practice for dynamic shooting failures, but a little boring as well.

My question: can anyone suggest a solution to the misfires, maybe some type of ammo I haven't tried yet (ie, other than the usual varieties of Remington and Winchester third rate stuff)? Oh, and the gun isn't that fond of unplated Federal lower velocity solid slug ammo, but it does a little better with that than with the above named bulk bucket types.

Mine runs basically anything I put in it. Win wildcat, 333, golden bullets, mini mags, fed bulk, super X. The only thing it didn't really like was a box of American eagle. Try some lube on the slide maybe. Perhaps get a new mag and see If that's the problem. Maybe the feed lips are warped or something crazy like that.

I got rid of mine because it was to picky with ammo, it only liked the expensive cci stuff. Even then it still gave me issues. Maybe try a 100% take down and complete clean, use a tornado brush on the bore.

Mine likes pretty much anything I've tried. I've had good luck with mini mags, blazers, federal auto match, and Remington thunder bolts.

Mine is also somewhat fussy on what it likes to eat, likes the Federal 36gr 1280fps or 40gr 1240fps copper plated and CCI minimags. Winchester often fails to extract, Remmington often fails to feed and sometimes fails to fire. I did eventually realize that I had more issues if I allowed my supporting hand down too far when gripping two handed such that some pressure was being applied to the magazine. My hands are big enough that I have to be more conscious of how I hold the gun. I discovered this when I realized it was more reliable when shooting single handed.

I suppose CCI minimags would work fine because I suspect they're identical ballistically, but they're nearly as unobtainable as the Federals and of course very expensive at present. As has been said before, might as well shoot 9 mm full time, more fun too.

I've hoarded a few thousand Federal rounds because they simply shoot best from my M&P, no fail to fire or fail to feed at all, however on the other hand Win X....garbage, even when they do fire, grouping is all over the place, you can even tell by the sound of the shot that some sound crisp and other rounds just pop.....some don't even do that.

My M&P 22 stays in the safe, as no matter what brand of ammunition I use, it still has FTF or FTE at least twice per magazine, and I never use cheap/bulk ammo. That and the pistol shoots about 4" high, and the adjustable back site, isn't actually adjustable. Definitely the worst 22 pistol I own.

I have used CCi Blazers in mine since new a month ago.1610 rounds through it with cleanings after each range session 350-400 rounds per trip.It has run 100% perfect.

Mine has been reliable with Federal blk 36 gr up to 10k rounds when the firing pin spring broke. I have replaced the spring and it is now up to 12,500 rounds.

I just got back from firing a few mags through mine. It will eat almost anything, but loves Remington golden bullets(in the bulk box, I haven't tried the bucket).

how are the triggers on these things? I have had many S&W .22's over the years, and my favorite being my 622. The trigger is crisp on that gun. How about the M&P's?? Are they mushy, or crisp?

I don't mind the trigger. Long take up, longer than the centre fire versions, but it breaks nicely since it's actually a single action. Reset is ok. To be fair, this thing is far from a target pistol, but fantastic as a fun plinker or training alternative for a duty style centre fire pistol.

Unless you're in love with this pistol, get yourself something that isn't so fussy. I have a 40+ year old High Standard - it will fire and eject anything it gets fed. I also have a Browning Nomad that's almost as good. My Ruger MKIII is also, not fussy. My S&W 41, on the other hand, will only work reliably with "target" or standard velocity ammo, but I'm hanging onto it, 'cause it's a really nice gun. Oddly enough, my .22 revolvers rarely seem to care, what they are fed.
