Looking possibly for a new scout style hunting rifle - but in .270?

I have a ruger scout in .308 and love the handy compactness of the rifle and the detachable mags. It also looks mean with the full XS rail and grey laminate. However, I have decided that I am not very confident in the bullet drop and trajectory of .308 and want something that shoots a bit flatter for hunting. I find myself constantly second guessing myself out in the field.

Are there any similar style rifles, in a similar price range, in something like .270? (Or something with a bit flatter trajectory than .308). I note that although a scout rifle, I actually mount a traditional scope on my current set-up and am likely to continue to do so. Iron sights would be a plus (I use detach rings and sometimes plink with irons).

It depends on the ranges or distances that you expect to hunt but you might just be pleasantly surprised at what that .308 will do for you .
The cartridge itself is excellent to work with if you are a reloader , the bullet options these days are endless.
Just food for thought.

I'm not being critical of the .270, its a fine round also.

If you are looking to go .270 to get the flatter trajectory then you are not looking for another 18.5" barreled rifle......

Hunting distances would be 400 yards and less. I just find the .308 starts to drop too hard after 250 for me to have any confidence on living targets. Interesting point on the .270 and barrel length - would that significantly effect this round? Just curious as to the other firearm options out there.

You need to sight in the rifle for Hunting, not for paper.

Find MPBR for .308 and go from there.

Although I myself am currently shooting a Browning in .270win, If you don't like your gun now, how about trying to lighten its load with some light Monometal bullets (solid copper as in the TSX or solid gilding metal as in the GMX (95%copper/5% zinc).
These can be had in 110/125 gr in the Hornady GMX and 110/130gr in the Barnes TSX. Also 110/120gr in Mil/tactical Mono etc. There are options to increase your bullet speed and therefore flatten your trajectory significantly. Just saying there are options.

You can do ok in a .270 with a 20" barrel I think...still pretty handy...or depending on the game you intend to hunt...a 243w or 260rem would be a nice choice....didnt Remington offer both calibers in their model 7?? That would work very nicely and in a short action provides greater compactness...btw for a real sleeper see if you can find a 6.5 Rem Mag

Load up some 130 gr Barnes Bullets, and try it at 300,400, and 500yds.

I shot alot of 150 gr bullets out of a .308 Winchester case at steel Turkey's at 400yds and Rams at 500 to understand the .308 Winchester will do the job.

I don't get it. Doesn't mater if you have 10" of drop or 15". You still have to hold over or adjust your scope accordingly. Just learn to use what you have that way you're more proficient with your gun. Unless you're looking for an excuse to buy a new gun. Then in that case its a green light to go a head. ;)

With .270 it's not only about smaller drop, but also energy delivered to the target past 400 yards. I like 308 just fine though.

If you reload, 130gr Barnes tsx out my 308 is very similar in velocity and drop to my 270 at reasonable hunting ranges. The higher bc of the 130gr .277 bullet will show its merits at further distances vs the 130gr 30cal bullet though. But its always fun to get another rifle. If you can find a husqvarna 4100 lightweight in .270 you would have nearly exactly what you describe you are looking for.
