Ported chokes good or gimmick?

I was shooting trap yesterday and by the 5th round with my O/U I was starting to feel some recoil fatigue. The cheekbone was getting hit some and my brain was rattling around in my head.

Is there any real benefit to a ported choke like the Kicks Smoke, or is it just a fancy way to dress your muzzle?

I'd just like a bit less womp without switching back to my gas gun.

I was thinking of just buying 1 or 2 to try, but figured I'd ask here first and potentially save myself a few hundred.

I'm using the Carlsons sporting tubes in my Browning 725 otherwise

I have both, Ext Ported and Non ported. Have never really found a recoil difference. I run them in two different 870's, same shells.

Perhaps a light shell may solve the recoil issue....

More gimmick than anything else, they do have the added benefit of being much harder to clean. Recoil is a direct result of gun weight vs ejecta speed & mass. The faster and heavier the load or the lighter the gun the more recoil you will have to hold back. What gun/shell combo are you shooting? My pet target load for trap is 1200 fps 1Oz of #8, for skeet I swap out the #8 for #9's sometimes. Anything heavier isn't needed unless you're shooting handicap.

By the sounds of it that gun doesn't fit you right.

Have to agree. As I sit here rubbing my aching cheek bone. I need guns with quite a bit of drop on the stock. Otherwise the repeated beating my face takes starts to affect my shooting. My cheek bone is aching from my Rem 1100 that I put two boxes through on the weekend. This was supposed to be a back up gun, but I think it's gonna hit the EE this week. Poor fitting gun is a far greater concern than having a ported choke.

I think they help a bit, I mean they would almost have to work a little bit. Ive found when hunting or competing, you don't feel recoil anyways. Fill the buttstock with lead shot, or a mercury recoil reducer those will actually help.

I have tried ported chokes and I and I didn't notice any difference in recoil.

+1. Test them for yourself if you can. A few years ago I participated in a test on ported barrels using a Remington 1100 swapping between two barrels of identical weight and length, one professionally ported, the other unported. The test was set up so the shooter wouldn't know which barrel he was shooting. I couldn't distinguish the difference sufficiently to know for certain which one I was shooting and neither could the other guys who were shooting. This testing convinced me that ported barrels and ported chokes are a waste of time and money.

Gun fitting however makes a real difference in felt recoil.

Just like ported barrels --- Gimmick -- Gimmick -- Gimmick.

Nope. Don't agree with you on that one. I had my 870 TC trap custom ported years ago based on the exact loads I was using when I did a lot of trap shooting and it made a difference in that case
The ports counter act the upward movement of the barrels when the gun is shot. This is a benefit for sure with the first shot of doubles. For me, also the lack of upward movement allows me to keep my cheek firmly on the stock longer and this keeps my head lifting to a minimum. Thus better scores in my case

On ported choke tubes all they ever got me was kicked out of a duck blind :( Those are gimmick IMO
Just my 2 cents
Cheers

Gun fit is the key (as previously stated by some posters). Try putting a couple of flat washers between the recoil pad and the wood of the butt stock on the top screw. Experiment with the number of washers. I expect that you will find a big difference. You can then cut the stock accordingly or install a shim to match. Also remember, a stock that is too long is not beneficial.
