Laminated SKS stock or Hardwood with a lot of grain/figure?

Just picked this one up, 1953r (Tula star on the stock) at CT and got a $50 gift card. What drew me to this one is the multicoloured stock with a lot of grain and figure... I think it's hardwood with uneven levels of shellac but I've never seen an SKS hardwood stock with so much grain and figure in it.

Could it just be a weird looking laminated stock because I've seen a few I'd had to guess which it was.

A fairly typical sanded and stamped hardwood refurb.
Gas tube looks blued, same with rest of rifle?

So they sanded and re-shellacked when refurbished? All blued and in good shape. Bore is shiny like new, unsure if they had chrome bores for the year. My SKS knowledge has faded, haven't owned or thought about one for a long time.

Many of the hardwood stocks (like this one) were in-expertly re-furbished, making for some interesting looks. The bore will be chrome lined.
Looks like you got a very nice one!

Good score on the SKS . I did the CT deal as well and got a new 120 buck motorcycle battery for the ZX12R , and 4 boxes of Speer Lawman 40 cal . 180 grain ammo for 22 dollars per box . I will use the 50 dollar coupon to get three more Speer Lawman tomorrow since their hand gun ammo has been slow to re-stock.....

I'm going to strip it and oil it... the other side has a lot of black sh!t all over it (check 1st pic). I had an M44 stock with similar black crap on it and once I stripped it, it looked like a million bucks after. It's a cheap rifle, I'll mess around with it a little bit then go play with it at the range. Here's the rest of it:

CT's parking lot was pretty full at 2:30... which is rare. People came out for that $50 Promo card.

World's Ugliest SKS!

f:P:

My god, this is an ugly ass stock. The amount of work I've put into it already and I still can't get all the shellac off of it. Looks like a couple arsenal repairs, I'm going to stain this dark as hell... it might look cool when it's done but I wish I hadn't started this project, as I almost killed a whole afternoon stripping and wet sanding - and it's not done. Handguard of course wouldn't come off (even tried to drill the pin out) so I taped it up, but it stripped so easily right to the bare wood. I'm certain someone at the arsenal messed around with this stock big time and just got the UHG from a bin and put it on.

Good luck matching these 2 pieces of wood too...

The ugliest stock I have seen was yesterday when going through 90 ish SKS at CTC! It was that hard sanded dyed reddish orange and left without any finish, unless there was a bit of oil on it, it had 6 repairs on it and sadly the receiver/ barrel were blued and very nice, a good candidate for an aftermarket wood stock!

Now that I rinsed off all the stripper and let it dry in the sun... it looks much better now. I can see where there is remaining shellac and where it's actually darker wood. I think the project will be easier now and just need a little light sanding and stain it.

The dark areas on the stock is remaining shellac. The rest seems to be darker areas of wood. This is some weird ass wood. Couldn't get the sling plate off as one of the screws was very soft and stripped.

I think it's going to be 'interesting' when I'm done with it cou:

I've been looking for a use for my Black Cherry or Cabernet (blood red) stain (2 on the right), first 2 are Ebony and Red Mahogany (I have those 2 but I don't think they'd look good on a Tula). I could always experiment and mix a couple together.

Just going to oil mine, I don't like the shiny furniture look.

I would have left it like it was in post #1...I know in Canada they will never have collector value and to each his/her own. I just like the retro painted by Boris look.

Yes I should have, I f@cked it up royally as the stock wasn't in great condition. Right now I'm trying to salvage it and make it look acceptable with some garbage Minwax Polyshades... just going to reassemble and shoot the f@ck out of it.
