I am thinking about getting a 1911 for IPSC classic division. I am looking at a STi Trojan or STi Spartan (if I can find one) in 9mm. I would add an ambi safety and mag well. Any other mods recommended?

Good Start - you do't have to go further - but if you do:
A Raised drilled and tapped mag release. Gives you the option for an extended MR and the raised option makes the 10 round mags work better.
Other than that, a trigger job. Should be cheap - both guns have the same fire control guts - tool steel sear and hammer; edm cut - a decent gunsmith should lighten that up easily.
Maybe Pin the grip safety...perhaps add an aftec extractor.

Lookup double tap sports saftey.
Thumb shield on the saftey is a hell of an option.
With 3.2gr titegroup and 147's, it takes very little to stop the slide, so eliminate all possibilites of riding the slide.

A good magwell is a start. Best is daweson precision ipsc legal.

Pin your grip saftey too. If you have a tight spring and grab the gun too high/low, thats a costly mistake.

9lb recoil spring, with a 17lb hammer spring.
If in cold weather, increase to 19lb hammer spring or lighten firing pin return spring.
google 'timing a 1911'. Lot's to learn and super slow mo video's do a good job explaining! This will also impact your spring weight decisions.

Anything you think won't happen when your under the clock, will happen.

And before you have a single malfunction, put an aftec extractor in.

Funny - everything discussed here so far is available at our website...

Dawson Magwell, D/T Mag Release, Doubletap Sports Safeties, Aftec Extractors; even 10 round 9mm mags. :d
One stop shopping!

Good suggestions above, but I'd add:
- skateboard tape for the frontstrap (this is the poor man's version of checkering)
- if you get an older Trojan (and I recommend the value of buying used over new (sorry Sean)): you'll need to swap out the front sight to fiber optic
- pay attention to which grips come with the Trojan. Some have skinny grips which you will either find essential or horrifying (depending on the size of your hands).
- Aftec, while an excellent extractor: may not be necessary. Both my Trojan (40) and Spartan (9) work flawlessly with the stock extractor

Love my Trojan.! Thanks Sean.

Added the Ambi-safety, now I want the one with the wing to avoid slide ride. Front strap is stippled nicely, and I put thin grips on it. Great trigger out of the box, shoots flawlessly, I dumped the Aftec extractor from my last 1911 , It was problematic. I found the standard STI extractor worked so well I bought two for spares. Just one more voice in a sea of voices...
