Who's got a Beretta 70 series with a shortened (restricted) barrel? Let's see 'em!

Hi folks,

Another thread on here has really got me thinking about picking up a Beretta 70 series pistol but I'm not a fan of the 6" barrel. I know some of you say that it grows on you but frankly I already have other 22 pistols that are more accurate than I am. I'm looking for a cool little spy gun to add to the fleet.

Dealers seem to have the 6" versions available these days for a reasonable price and there are always a couple kicking around on the EE. I passed on a shortened version (110mm) a month or so ago and have been kicking myself ever since.

I've seen them shortened and the sight reattached (or not) in various configurations sometimes with a thread protector but I wonder if they are actually 106mm or longer in some cases. So, if you have a restricted length barrel on yours, can you post a picture of how yours is configured? I know others here would appreciated it.

Here is a photo of one lucky CGNer's from elsewhere on the forums, and although I've never held one myself I wonder if the barrel is over 106mm as it looks similar to the 110mm one I passed on:

Here's a shot I pulled off the interwebs of one with a thread protector, wonder if it is Canadian legal/does the protector count as barrel length:

Anyway, I'd love to see real Canadian examples of what's out there. Would also love to hear what it cost you to chop her down.

I have one and I just decided to keep it at 6". I would buy the 4.25" barrel if they suddenly came up for sale though.

Anyway, my advice is to simply buy the pistol with the 6" barrel. Barrel is easy to remove. Then take the barrel to you local gunsmith and get them to cut it down, re-crown it, and tig weld / solder the sight back on. It would not be overly complicated. I think any local gun smith / handy person with a good tool set, could do it, worse case you could mail it to someone who could.
 
A custom barrel weight that matched the contours of the slide and attached to the barrel like a 1911 compensator would be nice looking.

That pic you posted of it is essentially what it will look like. I do know there are a few members who have them though bc before I bought mine I searched up a similar thread. Maybe try searching, I'm pretty sure they are out there.
 
Here's another question for you owners. Is the front of the slide split on the top to allow the original 3.5" barrel's front sight to travel? Again I've never seen one in person and it's hard to tell in internet photos.

It's the same slide, the only difference is you don't get both barrels in the box like they came with originally.
The short barrels got left behind in Isreal or where ever it is that these guns came from.
 
Is that a yes? The slide is split at the front? Don't mean to sound facetious it's an honest question. I found these pics online:

Yes they are the same as in they both have a cut out to allow the front sight blade to pass through.
Here's a good video by Matt that shows the Mod 72's we have been getting in Canada for the last couple years.

Thanks for posting that, very informative. I guess that explains why a model 70 looks similar to how a 92's front sight is attached, whereas the 71 and later models (with interchangeable barrels) were notched.

I still would like to see your pictures though!
 
Mine looks like the picture you posted and the one Matt is shooting in the video.
I've thought about shortening but after measuring it out and looking at the remaining protrusion it didn't look balanced.
The fake suppressor doesn't do it for me either but as I posted above, if someone made a barrel weight that could slide over the barrel and match up with the profile of the slide that would look nice.

I guess the best way to hide the longer barrel is just to get a mod 76..... :)
