Reduce recoil on Tikka T3 338WM

Love the tikka for carrying and hunting. Hate it at the range!! It kicks way harder than my .338LM

I have to agree. I have a T3 in 270 win and I kind of hate shooting it. The kick is sharp and the pad is hard. I especially hate it when wearing just a T shirt and shooting more than 20 rounds. I also have a 338 WM in a Savage 116. The savage used to kick the crap out of me with the original poly stock. I have since replaced the stock with a boyds and that has tamed it down significantly. It's too the point that I almost prefer shooting the WM over the 270.
Just thinking about a T3 in 338 WM makes my shoulder hurt.

I zeroed a new Tikka T3 laminate stainless 338 Win Mag yesterday and it was most likely the hardest recoiling hunting rifle I have ever fired. Also, the factory loaded Federal 250 grain NP loads showed signs of excessive chamber pressures. I am going to try to find a limbsaver pad for it today and perhaps try a different load that doesn't flatten the primers out so bad...

I could be wrong, but if it's just primer flattening, it's likely OK. I think flattening is a "relative" sign. If there's no ejector marks or hard handle close/open you're likely OK

I put a Vias brake on my X-bolt 338 Win. knocked the recoil down to about a 308 win. the noise level was increased but not nearly as bad as most brakes. The Vias directs most of the initial gases forward slowing the gases released sideways reducing recoil and muzzle blast.

Are the more forward holes oriented back?? Must be, or it'd make it worse!!!

I've run some brake designs through my head trying to think how to decrease the assault on those around you....

There's a really neat set of tests of brakes online where the guy uses flour on a tarp to map out the blast pattern.

I installed a limbsaver prefit pad they actually had in stock at Cabelas on this rifle yesterday. Seems to be a big improvement and it fit very well....will try it out on weekend and report results.

^ it makes a world of difference.

The factory pad on the tikka is just awful. Even the laminate model is a lightweight rifle though so the limbsaver only does so much.

i was going through some old posts and I came across this one.

I actually just purchased this rifle from Jaybe14. When I got it I put on a Boyd's laminate stock with a limbsaver. Fired 20 rounds down range yesterday. I found the recoil to be very manageable. It felt the same as a Tikka Lite in 300WM. The only thing that's hurting right now is my pocketbook for how much ammo costs.

The Boyd stock and Limbsaver made all the difference.

The rifle with optics and factory tikka stock came in at about 7.2 Pounds. The laminate stock brought it up to 8.4 Pounds. The 1.2 pounds and a limbsaver made all the difference.

I am still fairly new to rifles and went to the range with minor trepidation. I was pleased with the felt recoil, I found it to be very manageable.

A buddies dad's T3 .338 split it's laminate stock with just recoil.Too light a platform for anything larger than a 30-06..IMO........to each their own I guess....the 9.3x62 would also be lively I'm thinking........Harold

The 9.3s can be, it all depends how you load them.
I had two and never loaded anything heavier than a 286gr. bullet which they shot with superb accuracy.
The fist thing I did with any T3 of substantial recoil was to replace the aluminum recoil lug with a steel one and bed it properly..
