Hello Everyone

A recent post on another thread about Lever Arms Podolsk SVT 40 featured a pic of a Podolsk variant with a wide oval around the arrow. Someone asked how many variants of the Podolsk stamp there were and Horilka responded with 3. I was curious what they looked like, so I hit the books and the internet and fell down a rabbit hole of info about SVT 40s and the factories where they were produced. We all know about Tula, Izhevsk and Podolsk, but few seem to know about the other two, Mednogorsk andt Zlaoust which produced rifles with Tula and Podolsk production stamps. Based on what I've been able to translate from Russian websites, it appears Mednogorsk made around 125,000 SVT40s (including snipers) and Zlatoust significantly fewer - I've found production estimates range between 140 rifles to 1,500.

Can anyone tell me if there are any special stampings on a Tula or Podolsk SVT40 to indicate if it was manufactured at either Mednogorsk (factory No.314) or Zlatoust (factory No. 535) ?

I have read that a MK in a square on a '41 or '42 Tula may be an indicator of Mednogorsk production and a wider oval on a '41 Podolsk indicates a Zlatoust made SVT40, but can not confirm this.

How about it SVT 40 experts?

Thanks in advance,

Brookwood

In short: Mednogorsk is the city where factory No.417 NKV from Tula was evacuated, used same star logo as before. MK prefix was used in first month of production - Dec 1941, then they switched to normal alphabetical sequential order of prefixes.
Zlatoust factory No.385 NKV was successor of Podolsk factory No.460 NKV and made only several hundreds rifles. Why do you think WTB in my signature?

P.S. There's a group on FB - "SVT-40 owners and collectors" where recently this topic was discussed in great details.
P.P.S. I'm putting up together some reference about SVT-40, should be online on this site next week.

Thank you Horilka, informative as always, I'm looking forward to your post.
