To Brake a bolt action rifle or not too?!?!?

A rifle I'm looking at its a 338 win mag from the 80's and it has a brake already, I'm not feeling that style, I hope to got its a threaded barrel not a welded on, I can remember do the threads if they ate damaged, similar to a few axel spindle or bearing snub in automotive, home grown gun fixer, I'm no where near a gum smiths capabilities, just had to do it myself seeing a postage of 390 and then the costs wasn't suitable lol

Brakes are about third on the list of recoil reduction. Starting at the cheapest, try a premium recoil pad, maybe reduced loads/reloading, or a lead sled. One generally does not feel recoil shooting at game, only at paper.

Practice is also very useful, most people can substantially increase their recoil tolerance and accuracy with heavy kickers, simply by shooting more.

Thanks guys and yes I agree with you nowarningshot it is different, I don't use a sled, just a home made bag if if sighting in, hunting is standing and usually the same with target, new range not open to the public yet, and I've shot a dracov rifle, forgive my spelling, from a laying down position and it made me sit up as a kid, an American brought up, and a Barrett it left a mark, I think I'll invest in a few shoulder pads and a few different button pads too to see which is best, I'd optimaly like to have the TAC21 Chassis for the 700, I'm going to get a biped for the 308

A firend of mine has a 300wm with a break.
Very effective at reducing recoil.
But the excess noise and when prone the debris that gets kicked up is excessive

My type of shooting I don't like brakes.

It's the opinion of most male shooters that I've spoken to in the past thirty plus years...none of us get manicures or pedicures, mind you, so I'm sure there are a few exceptions... :)

You need to talk to more than the male shooters at your local club.

Wanna meet out by the bike rack of the nail salon?

šŸ˜†

Lol, I wasn't aiming that at you, by the way, I was just saying that since there are fellows that go there, I'm sure there are fellows that find even a .270's recoil "oh so nasty"...
I've no idea where the nail salon is, my wife does her own nails, and the bike rack is at my son's school...let's discuss this over a pint at the pub...I'll buy first round. :)

My buddies 12 yr old daughter hunts with a Savage 99 in 308, it has a plastic or steel buttplate, can't recall, and she weighs 90lbs. She loves that thng and puts a box of ammo through it just about every weekend.. .

Anybody thinks brakes are a bad idea I'll let you shoot my 338 win mag X-bolt stalker with the brake and without it's a real convincer. A friend of mine shot 3 shots with the brake then one without, he thought he broke his collar bone and wouldn't shoot it again until I put the brake back on. As for blast level try a Vais brake reduces recoil by 40-50 % without raising the blast as much as others.

Why does the testosterone level always go over the roof in every thread. Doesn't make you a man to shot with a brake nor a wimp to shot without one.

My TRG 308 has a brake so yeah, wimp.
Got 260 Rem to avoid needing a brake, yeah wimp.

Miss the recoil so usually shot a box of slugs; yeah, make me a tough dude.

PS. Got my 308 brake from Black Rose Tactical over in MR. Great guy, even index it for me so NO crush washer, yeah. Luv the brake, can see the bullets impact, no spotter needed.

GGG> "I'm not a pussy, but a 6.5lb .308 bloody hurts after 30 shots at the bench!!" What the heck are you shooting that is that light. Recall friend's T3 lite 300WM with scope was 7.5lb. Luv that kick, just count the lines on my shoulder for shot count.

+1 for black rose

And +1 for not needing to prove manhood by letting a rifle kick the sh!t out of you.

If I want recoil i shoot clays with my buddies SP10.....and I laugh, and laugh, and laugh. The closest analogy I can ever think of is that it's like being in a slap circle.....try it sometime, it's strangely fun.

The .338WM is right around the top of the charts for a lot of guys to shoot without a brake. I shot one a few times and I appreciated the soft recoil pad and the hefty rifle. :) If I were to buy anything even a bit bigger, like a .338RUM or .340 Weatherby, I'd get a brake installed. However, we were talking about a .308Win, with 16-17.5 lbs. of recoil energy, which is pretty darn manageable...while the .338WM is 33-35 lbs. and the .338RUM and .340 Weatherby with heavier bullets generate recoil in the 40s. The cutoff for a lot of guys is about 20 lbs., which is the 30.06 or 7mmRM, less and they're fine, but over 20 lbs. and rifles get less and less fun to shoot.

In my case, it's nothing to do with testosterone, I simply hate wearing double hearing protection to shoot a firearm.

This thread needs a tie in to the heaviest kicking rifle thread. Worst for me was a Savage 110 in 7mag. Much has to do with the stock design and fit. Some are just brutal in calibers that most would hand to a 12 year old.

I am a average guy, have shot some pretty big boomers. Getting accustomed, shooting in positions that allow your body to move and absorb the recoil, using brakes, and premium pads....all helps.

Personally, one of my favorite cals.....the 338wm kicks worse than some of the large bores. Its a combination of recoil impulse....in lbs, and speed. Most would only shoot my one 338 >>>>only once. Whereas, my 375 Rum with a brake, will deafen the guy beside you, but is very manageable.

Just got a 416 Rigby, a heavy beast in M1917>>>>cant wait. Standing on the sticks, or with every bag of shot i can fit on my Lead sled. Not stupid enough to try it prone. I believe its 60-63lbs recoil.

Had to google slap circle cause it couldn't be the obvious translation. Yeah, Society is at stage 3 of dumb and dumber. Schools should bring back the ruler :)

No, sadly it's the obvious translation. You stand in a circle and slap each other, hard.

Don't knock it till you try it.....I too scoffed, but the endorphins of a good slap are sometimes cleansing.
